Surfin' Salida Video

Post by Prairie Tater » Wed Jan 21, 2009 7:44 pm

Caught this guy last summer on the lower Salida wave. He said he was a pro waterskier & surfer from Flordia, and moved to Colorado to learn how to snowski & kayak. Said he got bored with kayaking, so he started surfing the Glenwood Springs wave and doing this in Salida.

Yea..I agree. That's alot of wave time to just stand there and do your taxes. The 360 was kewl, but just watching him lean back every once and awhile was about as interesting as watching curling.

I enjoy watching the river surfers however, I always wanted to try that.

He actually seemed like like a pretty nice guy and was far from being a "hole hog". This was a weekday afternoon and there were only three other boaters there, including myself. The max time he would/could stay out there at once was probably about two minutes. Also, as you can see in the video, he motions for the kayaker in the eddy to come on out to the wave and join him. I really enjoyed sitting there and watching him. Something different, I guess.

What surprised me is that he got away with anchoring that line on the light pole! Salida is pretty laid back, though!

I'm with you, Terry. Something different is kind of cool. I really don't see much difference in that and, say, a beginning boater just getting out there and hanging on for dear life for a couple of minutes and having a blast doing it. Which I have seen a lot of in Salida. I'm not the type to disdain anyone just for getting out there and giving it a go and having fun and I don't believe you have to necessarily get in and start tossing around like EJ or someone to have hole rights. In fact that is one attitude about playboating that kind of sticks in my craw.

But one time my lovely & charming and I happened to catch Big Sur crankin' out in CO. Awesome time. Charlie MacArthor brought a surf board and cut that thing up on it. It was the first time I had ever seen anyone surf a river wave with a board. It was kind of funny. He had to go about a half mile upstream (beyond sight) just to have enough time to get out to the wave, and then when he flushed, we all took turns pulling him in so he wouldn't flush over the dam! But he got several very cool rides and when he did, he didn't stay static, he worked it!

Kind of cool and something different to watch on a river!

By the way, Terry Spielberg Scorcece? Think I could hire you to shoot our next Run!?! Nice job on the machine, brother!

Terry, as you know, the Bull Creek wave (just up from the take-out) is great for videos. I'm gonna try and get my Sony Mini DV out a little more this year. Hope to be getting some good rain soon. See ya there.

Its a deal, Terry! And you're right. An excellent place to shoot. I have a couple of DVD's from the last two Springs there!

We can shoot video of each other shooting video of each other...

...or something like that!
