Gauley 14-15 Sep
We just finished loading the truck. Work has me in Washington DC this coming weekend. However, the Gauley is conveniently, "on the way home." My wife Gina is catching a ride up with somebody on Friday night and we are bringing our raft. The people we were planning on meeting up with couldn...

Wison's Creek (NC) Footie From Sat 14 Jul
If you have been paying attention, it has rained every day for over two weeks here in the Southeast. Everything is going off...in the middle of summer. Yesterday I could not run far, but Wilson's Creek is only 1:30 from the house. Although I did make a run into the headwaters and check on Gragg Pron...

Re: ALF
Two years ago I met up with this interesting gaggle for the Tellico race. Sitting at Baby Falls was absolutely hilarious. A few people had clean lines. Most didn't. Everybody was having fun. They get it when it comes to paddling...have fun. I am slowly resurrecting my old Ocoee, my purple one from b...

Many of you know Chris Wing and H2O Dreams. Recently, Chris did an excellent job putting together a video about a ver inspirational student of his, Lonnie. Trust me, it is worth every bit of just over six minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm1w_B7qFQ4" onclick="window.open(this.href);...

Re: FYI: how to fly with a kayak as checked luggage.
I've done this quite a few times domestically with a slalom boat and you also need to be careful about making sure you know the aircraft you are flying on. Only a 300 series Airbus or 700 series Boeing aircraft have luggage compartments large enough for the ~11' slalom boats. Bags really help the pr...

Fun in pointy fast boats...
Today Tad Dennis and I headed to the whitewater center to just have fun in pointy fast boats. I brought along the GoPro and caught a little footie.

Re: Interest in slolom races????
PS If you do get races going, make sure and include team runs consisting of three boats. Time starts when the first boat leaves the start and finishes when the last boat crosses the finish line. Each boat accumulates penalties for each gate. Thus if two paddlers touch a gate, each gets a two second ...

Re: Interest in slolom races????
Looking through this thread a little more, when it comes to running a race, don't make it any harder than it needs to be. True, I still read the USACK and ICF rules every year and know the ridiculous nuances. The basics are pretty easy, though. Some part of the boat and the head must successfully na...

Re: Interest in slolom races????
The international rules have been modified to where gates are now predominantly single pole gates. You can build them pretty easily by cutting a single PVC pipe in half. The bands are, "officially," ~12' colored bands. I paint them by masking using a little masking tape and newspaper, and ...

Re: Good vehicle for gas and kayak transport?
My wife and I are saving for a VW Jetta Wagon TDI with a Yakima Rack and Roll trailer. The trailer drops the toys in the slipstream and the TDI get's upper 40's. A few years ago a friend and I headed up to DC for a weekend of training and paddling on the Potomac. With two slalom boats on top, we did...

Check out Pat Keller and Issac Levinson playing on a big waterfall, the Green at 200% and Slalom boats on the Gauley. There is even footie in there of Pat firing up the Monkey backwards at 200%.

Anything Pacific Northwest...end of story.
Colorado has about a month and a half of good paddling in a good year. I currently live in the Southewast. It is good, but the Pacific Northwest trumps the Southeast any day.

If you have ever run a rapid backwards...
If you have ever run a rapid backwards, you know the feeling. Now imagine doing it down the Green Narrows. Although Pat has been doing this all summer, in typical Pat style, he decided to do it for the race a few weeks ago as well. Here is the GoPro footie of running the Narrows of the Green...backw...
