Trip Report!-Middle Fork Shirley-Sandiff Access

Post by R_Corter » Tue Mar 25, 2014 2:42 pm

Thinking about hitting this Saturday with the canoes and fishing gear. I looked at it on google looks fairly short trip. Any hazards that anyone is aware of? I have been down it in a river boat at flood stage but it was four years ago everything was under water. Any info will help with the safety of our trip thanks!

Are you talking about the Middle Fork of the White? If so I'm not familiar with these access points.

I think he's referring to the Middle Fork of the Little Red River that drains into Greer's Ferry Lake.

Trip Report- Middle Fork Shirley-Sandiff Access

Post by R_Corter » Mon Mar 31, 2014 3:32 pm

This is a report for 3/29/2014 Middle Fork Little Red River from Shirley Bridge to Stewart Access ramp on Greers Ferry Lake. Stewart Access is game and fish owned and is located off Sandiff Rd.

2 Canoes 2 adults 6 kids. I thought this was a 5-6 mile trip(by looking at google). To my best guestimation its a minimum 12 miles. We put in at 2:30 pm. Shirley gage was 7.15 and a slow rising river. Short pools and lots of mild-moderate rapids. We moved along well I figure we average 3+mph. We stopped twice about 15 minutes each. We did not reach our arrival point till 7:40pm. I will put in earlier next time!!! This is a great stretch of whitewater. I figure another foot or two and she would be a good challenge!

I will answer any question I can.

I kicked my butt for not taking the gps to record my info, sorry!!!

I'm so sorry it was such a long float for you all. I think many of us have similar trips in which we may have miscalculated. My personal best was floating the Lower Saline River, in July, when it was much too low, and I was way off on the mileage on our float from Hwy 270 to Jenkins Ferry. I think I told my nice ex-wife, that I should be through around 5:30 that day, however it was midnight by the time I arrived at the take-out. I can only be grateful it was just myself and a partner, and not any kids along. A hundred logs to drag over during the day, and I had much long since quit worrying about snakes since I didn't have a flashlight... The fishing did look very good though earlier on in the day :D

Best Regards
Jim

One thing I will add, I would not recommend this float much lower than 7.15'. Just a guess, at 6' and lower probably some dragging going on.

Not much fishing by me. We were planning on fishing the last pool and shoal. We didn’t have time. My son did fish that stretch while we were paddling and caught a nice white and Kentucky bass. There were so many boats in the lake pool it was unreal the white bass were practically jumping in their boats.
