West Fork, Saturday Afternoon, Trip Report

Post by kru1 » Fri Jan 10, 2014 7:10 pm

I think that she will hold. Drove by the other day and it was floatable then and we have gotten about another 1.5" since then. Will do a reconnoiter tomorrow morning on my way to roll session just to make sure.

Gonna hit Brentwood to Woolsey (possibly Riverside Side Park if time allows). Could be at the take out or put in by noon.

Post up if interested in an Saturday afternoon float.

Just checked it visually. Slicker Falls (upper) is rolling. The lower section will be runnable tomorrow afternoon.

Sounds good wpowell. I will get out of roll session at 11:00 and it will take me an hour to get to Brentwood.

How about we meet at Brentwood at 12:15-12:30, that will give me a few minutes to grab a bite to eat.

I can text you.

I''ve been wanting to paddle West Fork of the White on my SUP board for a while and never seem to be able to catch it (or paddling something else instead). Was considering a short run this afternoon (Sunday 1/12). Was thinking from the Woolsey steel bridge down to West Fork park (3.3 miles?). Level this AM is 5.48 ft and seems to be dropping less quickly than usual. I've haven't ran it before but according to ozarkpages and Kennon's book is runnable down to a level of about 4.5-5.0 ft. But I scouted it a few months ago from the Woolsey bridge at 5.6 ft & it looked pretty bony to me at the put in. Anyone have any input from personal experience of that section at that "low" level &/or looking to run that section this afternoon. Think it will be there?

Thanks!
Mike P.

It is hard to judge that stream by the gauge, it is in the city of Fayetteville and is susceptible to "flashing" from concrete run off.

Yesterday afternoon it was low, but wasn't the lowest I have ever floated it. It is dropping slowly. I'm in the headwaters on top of a mountain and I still have water running down my driveway.

Think that you could get down it. On that run the first mile + has some drops and the last mile + is pretty flat.

Paddled my SUP board on this stretch today at 5.2-5.3 ft. It was great!

Great day to be on the river. Temps in the 50s and unlimited sunshine, I'll take that in January any day. The river was on the lower side of "optimal level" but we didn't have any issue getting trough it (still brown). A total of four floated the river. Put in at Brentwood Rest Area and took out about a mile below the Woolsey bridge. There was a large shoulder/parking area along 71 a little south of West Fork.

There was a river wide strainer (tree trunk) about a mile downstream of the put in. It is in a fast moving pool, so plenty of time to react. Yakers did about a 25 yard portage to get around. I just pushed and pulled my canoe over the trunk cause I didn't want to lug my boat 25 yards.

Glad to finally get on a local creek, seems the rain went around us in 2013.
