South Fork of Spring

Post by arfish » Mon Nov 05, 2012 5:06 pm

Wanting to float Southfork of the Spring River, mostly for fishing reasons, and want to do a 2 or 3 day float. Thinking about putting in at Hwy 9 Access, just north of Salem and I notice a low water bridge about 17 miles down on a road called Fernwood Rd, or Co Rd 198.
I live in Fayetteville, too far to survey before making the trip out there. Does anyone know if I can use this bridge as an access and leave a vehicle there for 3 days?
Appreciate any help.
Thanks.

I don't know, but I think I know who to ask:

I've heard nothing but good things about these folks. My take would be that three days is a long time to leave a vehicle unattended at many access points, so you might want to have the Southfork Resort folks help with shuttle and spot the vehicle there on your take-out day. But if that is not to your liking, they would still be the "locals" who could tell you whether or not that is a known trouble spot, has an unfriendly landowner, or has a chance of being safe. I'm be doubtful if anyone would want to "promise" you that it will be OK, but if you ask the question you could probably read between the lines of their answer.

The South Fork Resort folks are indeed very nice and would be the ones to ask. That said, I believe they have arrangements with landowners for access and I don't think there are really any float camping opportunities on that stream. I could be wrong, but from what I saw the one time I paddled it I don't think so. Please let us know if this isn't the case. I'd love to spend some more time up there. It's pretty and the fishing is very good.
You come too.

Well with the long drive and low water we decided to go the lower Buffalo.
I still plan on getting out to the South Fork. I've heard its a very good fishing stream. Thanks for recommending Southforkresort, don't know why I didn't find them on my google research before I posted here. I like long floats on water that isn't well known and doesn't have many access points. There are several in north Arkansas I'd like to try, but the timing just hasn't been right.
As far as camping goes, I plan on getting a hammock soon, so maybe that will be best bet for camping on streams that don't have may gravel bars. That was one of my concerns as I was mapping it out on GE. But I figure we'd find someplace to camp...
