Special request from Boy Scouts for Feb 8 UALR Pool Session

Post by Cowper » Thu Feb 02, 2012 6:48 pm

A troop leader approached us last night - they were doing some water safety training with their troop during the same time slot as us. They finished all the things they wanted to cover last night, so when they come next week, they would like us to let the boys get a chance to play around a little bit and at least sit in and paddle a kayak.

REQUEST: If you can come to the pool session at UALR next Wednesday, Feb 8, 2012, please bring an extra boat and paddle, and help introduce someone new to our sport.

It looked to be more than 15 scouts, so we will need at least 5 or more boats in play to not have too much waiting. I don't care what you bring, as long as it floats - play boat, creek boat, recreational or touring - they are all good!

What size boats do you need? Would fun 1 1/2 be too small? If I get back in town in time, I can bring both my boats and both of my boys' boats.

Looked to be a mix of sizes - several of them would probably be a good match for the Fun 1.5.

Thanks, come if you can!

Not sure on Troop #; see your PM for more info.

YES, starts at 6 PM and runs to about 7:40. We're supposed to be "out the door" by 8 PM, and we've been slipping on that one. (We should try not to slip as much in the future, we don't want to risk damaging this good, long term relationship with UALR!)

If I can make it, I'll bring the outrage, give em a single bladed option.

Thanks to all those already planning to come.

I don't have anything formal in mind; my plan was to just give a very brief discussion on wet exits; then, depending on how things work out turn it over to the troop leaders to figure out "who goes next".

If you have a boat and paddle, bring it; I'm really not all that eager to put them in spray skirts unless we have a one-to-one ratio of helper to newbie. But the more boats we have, the less waiting there will be.

I'll probably be there, but I only have room for one boat in my car.

Thanks to all who are trying to bring a boat.

NOTE - right now, just speaking for me, I have at least two more boats than paddles. To play safe, if anyone has an EXTRA PADDLE they could bring, that would also be very helpful.

OK, I think he said Troop #231 and Troop #81.

BIG THANKS to everyone who brought a boat or paddle (several brought more than one). And to Billy and the others who went over to help and keep a watchful eye. The kids seemed to be having a great time, and the leaders were very appreciative.
