Value of a Monarch Aluminum canoe - attemped theft

Post by nike54_la » Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:09 pm

Hello all,
I have a general question. Recently, someone attempted to steal one of our momarch aluminum canoes from one of our camp properties. Luckily the theif was caught, but now the local police deparment wants to know the value of the canoe so that they can press the correct charges.

Where would we go to get an estimate of the value of the canoe?
Does anyone know off hand the value of this canoe?
The details are that it's 16 foot aluminum and was probably purchased in the 80's. It shows normal wear and tear for a canoe used on a lake, but still does what a canoe should do.

Would the value be over $500 or under? Thanks for any information anyone can provide!

I would think less than 500.

As would I. $300 seems fair to me unless we're talking about a flat back.

The value could be judged as replacement cost.
Would you buy a used one?
If the "replacement" value is above $500 it moves it
to felony theft. I vote for that.

The canoe in question would definitely be worth less than $500 ($100 - $200 range) & to replace it with a canoe for lake use comparable to the 1980's aluminum canoe would definitely run less than $500. (You should be able to find a comparable replacement for $300 or less). A quick review of craigslist can provide you with comparable replacement cost for a used aluminum canoe for use on a lake.

You can buy a brand new Pelican canoe from Academy Sports (that if stored out of sunlight should give you several years of service) for $350 & would work fine for lake use. http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/store ... =581132415" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(Note: I have no affiliation with Pelican or Academy.)

Sold a few "good condition" Grumman SK's for $225 each back when I bought the trailer that's for sale over in the trading forum.

Thinking the LEO's are looking at numbers within maximum range for charges. Anything more than $300 for the total of the crime would be a crime in itself.

Linda,

My friend Rick Brumley had a fleet of several Aluminum canoes when I worked for his 'Two Rivers float Service' for a couple of Summers in the early 90s. Among his inventory, I think Rick had one Monarch canoe, a Ouachita, and several Alumacraft canoes, the Monarch, and the Ouachita were probably the best built, and the most heavy of the several ones he had.
I think the posters so far have offered good estimates for your canoe's value, in-so-far as a usable canoe. However there may also be the sad possibility that it may have been stolen only for it's value as Aluminum scrap metal. In todays Ark. Gazette Business section, I see the spot metals price for Aluminum is about $1.0786 lb.. This would be less than $50 bucks for a scrap thief, but still a big chunk of Aluminum. :NoNo:
