Spring Break Video Update

Post by FarPastGone » Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:26 pm

A couple weeks ago Brian Gibson from Texas and I headed out East for Spring Break with the intentions of playing it by ear. An overzelous decision to try and nab Johnnies Creek in Alabama and the subsequent skunking left us with a single state trip. Noel Parker and Ben Maguire from Fayetteville met up with us for the majority of the trip. Anyways, I have been really busy lately, so I finally just got around to putting together all the footage we got.

The guy that took us down said it was around 4-5" and the online gauge showed between 1000-1100. It seemed like a great level, but I have only run it that one time and don't really know the range of it. The sieves and undercuts are supposed to get really bad at low water though.

Is that Little River Falls at 2:30? I've only seen it once at a low level.

That was Cable Falls. A few locals were contemplating running the falls the day we were out there, but they were debating on if it had enough water, which is not usually an encouraging sign.

Spanke we will make up for it in a few weeks.

Nice video. I can't recognize which one is South Saudi, for it was 1200 cfs when we ran it.

Thanks Ryan! There are only two quick clips of it (the first drop and slots). The level in the video was 18"-20" which is a medium level, we also ran it that week at the 22" range. They changed the gauge at the take-out so the old inch correlation to level is different. I also found out while we were out there that even though the Sauty correlation is off the Town Creek gauge the drainage for South Sauty is bigger (so I am sure 1200 on the Town gauge was a good level). Last year when I got to run it high the Minefield rapids reminded me of some Cheoah esque dropage.

South Sauty is like the better Alabama version of Richland with fewer boofs.
