Dutch Oven Cookoff at Rendezvous!

Post by KimL » Wed Sep 16, 2009 4:41 pm

Calling all bakers to show your skills at the Dutch Oven Cookoff at 'Vous! We'll be meeting in the Cantina to prep coals at 3:30 and will start judging around 5:00 p.m. Competitors may enter as many times as they want, keeping in mind that we'll award prizes for breakfast, dinner-related food, DESSERT, and best overall.

The rules are that there aren't many rules, just to use coals and Dutch Ovens and have your food ready in time for judging. We'll provide a place to cook plus pans to hold your coals.

Competitors should bring
*food to cook (pre-prep okay to the extent that you'd do before any campout or river trip)
*your own coals and chimney (or lighter fluid)
*your own Dutch Oven(s)

I'm also accepting bribes and other pleas to judge. I'll be looking for two adults and one child.

Not a competitor or judge in the Dutch Oven Cookoff? You are welcome to watch, but please do so from outside the Cantina. We make no promises whether there will be anything left after the judges and competitors sample everything, but if you're lucky we may have a little left to bring to the potluck.

In the interest of encouraging others to give a shot at the DO Cookoff, I'd like to share how I got into it. I first learned about Dutch Oven cooking paddling with the great folks of the ACC. Then I wrangled judging at the Cookoff. After I did that once and "helped" another time, someone told me I should just jump in, so I did. I won a prize my first time entering, but I have to confess it wasn't because my dish was that good. My major competitor, who is very, very good at this stuff, had a margarine malfunction. I entered again and won--but only because I was the only one in my category. Still, I got to cook and watch the real pros as they cooked. If you've helped with Dutch Oven cooking before but don't have your own oven, talk to me. I may be able to loan you one. Regardless, please consider entering.

Oh, and did I mention that we'll be cooking right next to the
margarita mixoff ? It's a great proximity for getting some liquid refreshment while working over those warm coals!

Calling all DO bakers! Dave Reid, are you 'Vous bound? Catherine Hill, how about that great pumpkin recipe you served up in Utah? Emily Dodson, are you attending--and are you cooking this year? (Didn't you say you would last year?) How about PaPa Bob Stout? Richard, you've seen it often enough! Mike B, how about you? Crane????? I know I'm missing lots of great DO bakers!

Hi Kim
I saw this Recipe on Arkansas Outdoors

Panhandler Spaghetti

1 1/2lb Ground Chuck
1 Yellow Onion Chopped
1 Green Pepper Chopped
1 can whole Kernel Corn
1 28OZ can diced Tomatoes
1 10OZ PKG of Spaghetti
4 Beef Bullion cubes
1 Tsp Italian seasoning
Salt and Pepper to taste

Brown the meat, add all ingredients saving the uncooked spaghetti for adding last. Break up the Spaghetti and mix it in uncooked, mix in really good.
Top off with more cheese. Takes about 45 minutes with six coals on bottom and a lid ringer of coals on top!
Enjoy
