mulberry river report-12/30

Post by obie » Wed Dec 31, 2008 12:12 pm

Floated from Wolf Pen to Bryds yesterday with my son and his buddy. Two canoes and one yak. Water and weather were great. Saw only three other boaters all day. Just below chain saw jungle on river left saw two bald eagles. Outstanding day.

Our group were the three others you saw. It was indeed a great day to be on the water.

I was happy to see Chainsaw Jungle open again although there are still a rootball and downed tree near the entrance that requires good boat control to negotiate safely. I don't think it's ready for most rental boaters just yet.

Amen on the rental boaters. Glad to see you guys go left at the bottom of the shoal at the jungle. We were going to scout before we went through but watching you guys go left saved us the scout. The natural inclination is to go right. Thanks.

What are the landmarks that one is approaching Chainsaw Jungle? I usually put in at or below High Bank so have forgotten the approach. I know the feature pretty well once I see the river turn to the left & then back to the right. I'm always leary to go through that feature if I have inexperienced boaters with me. I saw a foot entrapment there a few years ago.

On river right back in the woods about fifty yards is a wierd octagonal or rectangular wooden structure with some sort of canvas curtain forming the walls. Stay on river left in the slack water when you go down the shoal. At the bottom of the shoal the river splits right and left with most of the current going right. GO LEFT . Strainers in the right channel.
