Buffalo River - Sun-Tue Dec 28-30 UPDATE (2)

Post by Richard » Wed Dec 24, 2008 9:10 pm

Eric, Susan and I are meeting at 11am on Hwy 16/21 at the turnoff to the Glory Hole. We will be hiking down to the Glory Hole. Possible stops along the Buffalo River will be Lost Valley, Ponca Elk Center and Triple Falls.
My cell phone is 501-450-0217

Paddling on Mon-Tues. Plans have not been set for this yet.

UPDATE (1)
Buffalo River - Sat-Tue Dec 27-30

It looks like rain is very likely until dark on Saturday. Consequently, I don't plan to paddle Saturday. With 2-3 inches of rain expected on Saturday, it is very likely the Buffalo will be in flood all day Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday look to be perfect.

Saturday: Rain (2-3 inches),High winds (gusts to 40mph), Temp 64/32
Buffalo may go into flood stage.

Sunday: Sunny, light wind. Temp 50/33
Buffalo may be in flood early on, but upper Buffalo may be runnable.

Monday: Sunny, no wind. Temp 59/37

Tuesday: Sunny, light wind. Temp 61/34

Next question is which section? The rule of thumb has always been to paddle the upper end when water is sufficient. It should be sufficient and then some. I had planned to bring the dogs but this would be their first time on moving water and that may be asking to much of them on the upper end so I need to know who can paddle Mon-Tue and where they want to paddle. Spending Sunday morning chasing water falls (by car and on foot) may be interesting. I have some in mind. Might start with the Glory Hole.

First Post:
I am thinking about going to the Buffalo. I am pushing this one off by one day to allow the rain to go thru and to see what it does for water levels. I have two dogs I have been wanting to take to the Buffalo and whether I do or not depends on who goes.

The weather should be cold at night but nice during the day. I am open to suggestions from anyone wishing to join me.

Richard - Susan says "We" might be in for a Saturday-Sunday trip per the the forecast temperatures. She has to be at work early Monday morning, but otherwise we are good to go, as her folks leave Friday. Might not make it over where ever is it Friday night, but we want to paddle. I would be in my canoe and Susan would be in her Carolina sea kayak. Great way to finish off the year, and we are alwys cool with doggies. Let us know where and when. House 479-986-8567 or 479-721-9101 cell. spesche@aol.com. Give me a heads up and I might even come up with some firewood.

What section I have never run any of the Buffalo and have always wanted to. I have hiked all over it and love the scenery.

Luke,
One of these days we will be able to run the Cadron without seeing a tire.

And O yeah, If it rains enough I may take the raft so I can haul some firewood. In any case I will bring some firewood.

Gretchen, It will be 60º here and the Buffalo is running.

Eric, Susan and I did some waterfall chasing. Glory Hole was spectacular. Twin Falls was Triple Falls. Lost Valley was the best I have seen.

We saw Painter Bob putting on at Boxley Bridge. Tom Boroughs and company had just finished running the Hailstone. Ran into Rodger Keesee at Twin Falls. What a great day to be in the Ozarks.

Monday and Tuesday will be outstanding days to be on the Buffalo. Anyone who can should go.

Unfortunately I have personal matters that will keep me at home. :(

Hey Painter Bob so did you run Boxley to Ponca sunday? Dave and I as well as few others did. Did you see the golden retreiver on river right just down from Pearly Springs? Curious? poor guy looked lost and scared.

we went up to the waterfall at pearly around 2:45 to 3:30 and never saw any dog? and i'm pretty sure we were the last ones off the river. by the time we shuttled, and loaded up it was almost dark. we did run into the rafting crew at the boxley bridge when we went for my car but nobody said any thing to us about a lost dog!
