What is this?

Post by A Savage spanke » Sat Nov 22, 2008 7:00 pm

I was looking at the jackson website, and was browsing photos and came upon this
No link, it was a virus, scroll down and paddledog posted the picture.

What kind of paddle is this? And if it's not a paddle what is it?

Ah when I copy the link it shows up as jacksonkayk.comect but when i paste it, it turns into that windows scanner thing.

http:/www.jacksonkayak.com/photos09/galleryph ... ounter=176 I typed that manually. Forget it, that won't work either. I'll never know :( But if someone wants to look at Jacksonkayak.com it's on photo page 161 to 176 of 430. Purple Jackson allstar, kayaker holding some type of cricket bat? What is it?!

(fish is on to me...)

They are generally referred to as "Greenland" style paddles. Do a search on the internet and you find lots of sites telling you about them.

I have a paddle building friend in Salida CO, Mike, who makes Cricket paddles.

He will make white water paddles (they are great I have two) but mostly makes these greenland style paddles for sea kayakers.

believe it or not but they do look almost exactly like the photo.

That is small blades and not that long shaft.

I have been in Mike's shop and played around with these things and they seem pretty awkward too me.

But, that style is exactly what the Eskimos used to make out of driftwood and they were big time sea going kayaks.

According to Mike there is a fairly large group of folks who enjoy using these paddles.

Come to think of it, a lot of the modern play boaters are going to zero offset blades these days.

Spanke, you should edit your first post and take that link out. That is all I saw when I opened up the topic so I clicked it and it messed up firefox.

Thanks

Note the defensive posture taken in the above photo. This is a tool that says YES! THIS IS MY WAVE, HOW BAD DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU NEED TO SURF TODAY! :hammer:

Comes in mahogany, white pine, bamboo for the environmentally conscious paddler, and teak.
