I have never run it. Is this a good level for a 1st timer? Two of us are going somewhere

Depends on your skill level and how high the water gets. If you are a newbie I wouldn't recommend it.

Hey Nate - are you staying Friday night and paddling Saturday too? I had to switch an appt I had Monday(to go to the memorial) to Friday and there is no way out of it. As soon as I get back from Monticello, I'm heading up to the Bartons. Hopefully, there will be some left on Saturday and Sunday.

Rose is coming to the party so I don't know if I'm staying Friday or coming back early Saturday morning. Hoping to paddle Saturday and enjoy the party Saturday night.

I have paddled the tot a billion times. Out of probably 8 yrs I have only swam it twice, both in the same damn hungover day  but at least it was winter....that was fun....or .... NOT

I have also paddled the spillway at lake norrell, but only once. It was raging though.

I've heard many people say - get good at the Cossatot, then try Richland. It's pretty good advice...and it sounds like you are ready. Should be plenty of good folks willing to help you down, me included, but Friday may be a little too big. Saturday and Sunday it should be at great levels.

I would DEFINATELY want to go with people that knew the river very well, but am pretty confident in my paddling.

It looks like it is already down to 5 ft. Shouldn't it be around 4.5 or less by 2ish?

Also, how long does it take to run it and shuttle? If we put on at 2:30 what time do you think we would be loaded back up and headed out (approx)

Thanks!!!

at this level with no major mishaps 2 to 2 1/2 hrs.

If you have a decent roll and have ran the tot falls a bunch at different levels catching eddies you could probably handle it with someone guiding you through the lines. Like previously stated it is not that much harder at higher flows to a point and alot of lines actually open up. it just gets pushier and things happen a lot faster.

Couple of notable spots is green rock? rapid you hit a slot and have to move quickly left(eddy) or catch main flow to right to miss a huge square boulder with a sieve on the left.. Would not be a good place for a swim or protracted flip with multiple trys.

Another is wingers right/apple pie/sauce that has a long lead in with a crux move at the bottom.

And of course there is road block rapid that you need to be aware of.

I'll try to make that start time, too. Richland is not nearly as forgiving as the Cossatot, so you need to be on top of your game. We've had to send a few folks on walks through the woods (not easy and no fun carrying a boat!) in the last couple of years. Sounds like you'll be OK, but not a place to show up in a play boat with a sketchy roll.

Thanks for all the responses and advice. I think I would probably be fine, especially going with you guys who know the river. However, I just got out of a meeting and dont have any of my s**t together. Dont think I could make it to the putin in time.

If you guys are going again tomorrow please post something, and I will try to make it.

Thanks again,

you guys have a blast!
