Petit Jean Davies Bridge Waterfall

Post by JTarver » Tue Mar 31, 2009 7:30 am

Has anyone ever tried to run this? Is it even runnable?
Thanks,
Joe

Better question is what about Cedar Falls. I think it was damn near runnable on this day.

It's got a wicked lower shelf just below where its landing, and there's some rocks that most of the water lands on. I went to Petiti-Jean about two months ago, and trust me I was scouting lines the whole time. IF you decided to run it, you'd have to have a ton of speed to clear the shelf and rocks. I'd give anyone who ran it a 50/50 chance of being fine with a huge smile or being seriously injured.

This is just my opinion, and my memory from two months ago could be kind of shaky (I've watched a lot of paddling videos since then). Anyone else got an opinion?

big ticket item there.. creek above is posted no swimming, wadding. Rock shelf the water lands on if enough water to get you out there. still would be a big no no. only three ran creek below that point big water. big ticket I would bet if caught walking in with boat in hand.

Heard that someone with a boat strapped to the roof stopped there to do some hiking. People instantly called the police and rangers showed up within minutes. I can believe it, because I had a hang glider on my roof one time and the same thing happened to me. They told me flying is off-limits within PJ park limits.

BTW...Nice pics!!!

I looked at some pictures of it a while ago with water on it, and figured it looked as doable as some of the stuff getting run nowadays (Desoto Falls in Bama). Definitely would be guerrilla style run if someone were going to do it, and I wouldn't expect any information before hand on here either.

Your last problem if you're planning on running Cedar falls would be getting a ticket. The landing is an uncertain affair indeed - not nearly as clean as one would like for a drop that size. My days of running big drops into little pools are behind me now, but I'm sure that Cedar Falls is quite dangerous and I'm equally sure that someone will be crazy enough to run it. Hope they're alive and conscious when the rangers hand them the ticket...

B. Ward just cleaned 101 foot metlako falls, he may be a perfect OG arkie candidate for this! I agree w/ fish screw the ticket if you can stick it! The whole creek is gnarly and its a shame its considered off limits. As far as pool depth, I am certain that w/ enough water that thing goes.I do know about the shelf and dont think w/ the right level it would be a factor! The real challenge to stickin it(besides nailin the correct angle) would be the drops just before BIG CEDAR!Man it sure doesnt look like 90 feet though does it?Also notice that D@MN flake right at the final lip, it'll be hard to get a sweet line b/c of that thing.(may boof out on accident) :(

Pedro would run it...land on his head....disappear behind the curtain and then walk out carrying boat.....and then go on national TV.

We're all just a bunch of dupers. :hammer:

If some are duper than others, are they super-dupers?

Duped if I know...?

OK....so lemme gather all my data....

Off limits to run.....Well i dun't reed soo guud. chekk
rangers...money is always a nice gift..but i don't have any..so stealth mission required..disguise self as a bush. check
shelf at the bottom...bring jackhammer and caution signs...check.
Big cedar as a backup...bring parachute and Living Will witness. check
off limits to swimming and wading....seal launch to avoid wading..be a kayaker to avoid swimming...check.

I know..the last one was a cheap shot...but I'm not above it!! Obviously.

Kewl deal, well thanks for the data on it. I have a geology field trip up there this saturday..so I figured I would ask.

So uhh...what is runnable that might be close by PJ state park area? Anyone from that area gonna hit anything saturday?

Thanks,
Joe

I was told, it's been run, but without a boat. A young one couple was wading above the falls (many decades ago), one slipped, the other tried to save, both went over the lip, both survived.

I'm guessing those pictures were taken after a really heavy rain, as in right after one of last year's hurricanes passed through. That's the only way I'd say it would be possible. That said, from what I remember of the rocks and pool at the bottom from the last time I scouted it, I'd run it right of center and plan on bombing down the rest of the gorge for a pick up at the low water brindge just before the confluence with Petit Jean River.

And use a van to hide the boat and gear from prying eyes..... :poke:

Anyone know how tall that vertical drop is? I know they said that the whole drop was 90, but that has to include the lead in.
