Fall outing suggestions for Buffalo

Post by jwarren » Fri Sep 19, 2008 10:52 am

I'd like suggestions on which sections of the Buffalo would be most leisurely and picturesque for a weekend of canoeing during the fall color change. Am organizing trip for 5 couples ...who want to paddle 5-7 miles each day and take in some of the best sights. Also, any suggestions on clean, furnished, reasonable cabins?

Have read about SilverRun and Wild Bill's. Opinions? Thanks.

J.,

Gosh, the picturesque and leisurely sure fit many of the sections. I'll let others chime in with suggestions here to fill out the weekend but I really do like the Tyler Bend to Gilbert section for one day. My wife and I made this trip during our honeymoon and really enjoyed the floating and fishing, and even more so, at the time, the dining each evening at The Riverside Kitchen in Gilbert when Ms. Briggs ran the place some seven years ago. We booked a very nice log cabin near Silver Hill that was perfect. We were up there about this time of year and just ahead of Elk season otherwise we wouldn't have been able to find lodging, maybe it will be over by the time you are planning your trip. For the most scenic 'bluffs views' and more challenging water, farther up the Buffalo, near Ponca would also be a suggestion, with accommodations in the Ponca-Jasper area would be another choice, if there's enough water.
The Buffalo is such a favorite of many of the club members for a long time, do search the numerous posts here on the board, on the river, it's many sections, recommended levels, and the more specific recommendations that folks have made. Good luck and have a good trip!
