Thinking about a Rec kayak

Post by Ray » Sat Feb 16, 2008 8:34 pm

I am thinking about getting a recreational kayak, that would be at home in flat water, used for fishing, and still be able to handle up to class II rivers. Also be roomy enough for camping gear, plus large capacity of 350 lbs or so with all gear. Am I dreaming or is there something out there that will accomidate me. Thanks...Ray

The Dagger Approach would probably be pretty good. It has a drop skeg for flatwater. It's small enough to handle well in whitewater. The cockpit is small enough for a good spray skirt. You could modify it with rod holders pretty easily. It has a dry storage compartment and a deck bungee for camping gear. You could also add more bungees to it for more storage. It's rated for 330lbs, but you can add float bags to handle more weight. :)

wilderness systems makes a really good line of sit-on-tops. they are very stable for fishing and self bailing. i have two and i love them. they even make a fishing specific model with rod holders and such.

Adding flotation won't increase the weight capacity.

Just bought an approach 10.0 can't wait to get it in some water as soon as I have time and weather and water permitting.
OK here is my shameless plug for Don at Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters. Great service with sound advice from years of experience and large selection of boats.

Native Manta Ray 12

Post by mikeark » Thu Mar 06, 2008 2:50 pm

Just purchased Manta Ray 12 SOT by Native from Don at Ouachita Outfitters. He was a great help with recommendations about the type of boat I should get and the proper carrier to purchase. I have had it out several times on lakes in South Arkansas and want to plan some river outings. Love the boat.

I am looking for a sit-on-top kayak for similar reasons as the OP. I was told the Ocean Kayak really handle wave impacts (wakes from motor boats and wind)? Any comments?

I have not really experienced significant wave action yet. I do know that the Manta Ray is a very stable and comfortable boat. I would think that it could handle about anything wakewise. You might give Ron a call @ Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters in Hot Springs. I believe he carries both brands and will give you the straight answer. My use so far has been in private lakes and small public lakes...no large boat traffic...Good luck

Ray,
I am also a larger paddler. I recently was up at Kansas City Paddler and found their Riot Krypton! It felt awesome to sit in, plenty of room, easy to get in and out. I am enclosing a link. Capacity is #350. I haven't purchased it YET, but it is on my wish list!
