Buffalo River Sat. & Sun. 8/17/13 & 8/18/13

Post by AR-Nimrod » Fri Aug 16, 2013 7:56 am

Clan Crawford is headed for the Buffalo this weekend. :yahoo: Right now it looks like Ponca won't hold, but Pruitt will (just barely). The current plan is to camp at Ozark tonight and float Pruit to Carver on Sat. (tomorrow) camp at Ozark again and probably paddle Baker Ford to Tyler Bend or Grinder's Ferry on the way home on Sun. This plan is subject to change. Depending on water we may have to move down river.

If you are interested chime in here or text/call 8 7 Zero 8 one four 8 two 8 six.

What a great weekend! :yahoo: Was late getting off Fri. Got to Ozark a little before 9 p.m., made camp and went to bed. Woke up Sat. to cool and foggy conditions. :eh:  Wait a minute; isn't this August? Paul (Mr. I'm in / I'm out /I'm in) :poke2: showed up about 8:30 then Roger showed up about 9:30. Roger was in contact with Mike Beebe and the upper river had held better than expected, so our group; Clan Crawford, Paul and Roger hooked up with the Beebe's, Cranes and Kreuger's for a slightly bony but still very fun Steel Creek to Kyles Landing run on Sat. We could have done with a little more water but couldn't possibly have had better weather or better companions. Felicia and Hannah (HHH) had never done this section and I hadn't been on it since I was 14 (30 something years ago). :kayak: We will definitely have to try harder to hit the upper Buffalo more in the future.

At one point we came across a pinned rental canoe. Paul, Hannah and I were ready to try out our newly acquired SWR skills in unpinning this boat. I set Hannah as High Safety, Paul is on bank at river right setting an anchor point with webbing and pulley. Jim, Mike and I wade out from river left with ropes and carabiners. The young men (first time canoers it turns out) and us get everything hooked up and Larry (party-pooper) Crane suggest we try the 12 Boy Scout method first. :eh: Well, in this case it was two young guys, two older gentlemen and one middle-aged tall, bald fat guy. I'll let you figure out who's who. Long story short we were able to lift one end high enough that it cleared the rock and the canoe was free. What a disappointing success.

Sat. night we actually had and enjoyed a campfire while tent camping in August in Arkansas. :wht: :? WHAT? Then on Sun. we hooked up with Roger's friend Judy and her friend Robert and had a short but wonderful leisurely trip from Hasty to Carver. Then it was load up boats and start the approx. 5 hr. drive home to El Do so Hannah could start what she refers to as her "last first day of school" on Mon.

An excellent adventure! It sounds like a great time was had by all. I really was tempted to hit the road for the eight hour trip, but in the end stayed local on the Tennessee Buffalo River. I paddled a section above my normal haunt, spent a restful night on a gravel bar, then finished out the trip by noon on Saturday. No otehr canoes or kayaks seen the entire time. Just deer, ducks, beaver, otter, birds of prey and aquatic critters. And Jake of course. I actually put on a fleece jacket Friday night while cooking supper (sweet-n-sour pork) and had hot coffee with my meal. Saturday I paddled thru three brief light showers, but the forecast thunderstorms never materialized. Just a light cool breeze. Felt like late September or early October.

Miss Marlo and I had a very nice time floating Saturday! Thank you all for your company. Due to previous long-term family obligations, it had been several years since we could go to the Buffalo.

A special thanks to Paul Smith for the shuttle out at the end of the day!

Best Regards
Jim

We had a ball. Finally got to spend some time with Richard and met some neat gals who weren't from around here (Taiwan, France and I forget where else). They had great attitudes and were a lot of fun, but they weren't sure what to think when Cowper lassoed a raccoon Friday night. The original plan for Saturday was Woolum to BF, but we poked around so much Saturday morning that we decided an abbreviated float would be prudent and settled for Tyler Bend to Gilbert. Of course that itinerary put us at the Gilbert Cafe around 5:45, which was not a bad thing at all. I caught a few fishies (or as the girls said "poisson"), all of them smallies.
You come too.

I hate it when time doesn't do its thing. It is to keep things from all happening at once. Oh well. Anyway, we too had a great time on the Buffalo. Four international students attending UCA thoroughly enjoyed the Buffalo. With Cowper around don't expect the usual to happen. Three girls who had never canoed before went down Clabber Shoals.
