1st Annual Buffalo River Kayak Rodeo (proposed)
What I propose is to have a fun filled day at the buffalo river. This will be opened for everyone. I was thinking on having a donation pot for a Lee Creek gauge as well. This is what I have in mind for the day:
1st Saturday morning I was thinking on having a workshop for roll session and friendly kayak tips
2nd we can do a safety course with throw ropes and instructions on safety to promote
3rd BBQ W/BYOB social gathering time
4th I was planning on a obstacle course planned out with buoys with a 1st place 2nd place 3rd place winners receiving a trophy (small) maybe hand made
5th At the end of the day have a Boatball game to finish it off!!
This is all getting kicked around right now. I can lose something, or I can add something please let me know. Also working on a date to have this fine event!!

Is there a pretty good pool on the river somewhere close to Jasper? The only one I know of is the Pruitt swimming hole. I was trying to figure out where there was enough water besides the BP area.

I'm was thinking Pruitt but if it keeps being dry it might go to Carver.AR-Nimrod wrote:Is there a pretty good pool on the river somewhere close to Jasper? The only one I know of is the Pruitt swimming hole. I was trying to figure out where there was enough water besides the BP area.
I was looking for some input too on the idea of a rodeo if people would like to do something like that

I am not a lower buffalo (below the Boxley Bridge) in the know person. But, I have done some floats over a lot of the area.
I have never seen a good rodeo wave / hole play spot on the lower Buffalo.
I would love to see a lower Buffalo rodeo take place just having trouble visualizing a spot?
We need Painter Bob and Richard to give some opinions on a surf spot retentive wave hole on the lower Buffalo.

It wouldn't be a rodeo on a wave. I was thinking more on the line of flat water paddling around some buoys and who ever did the best time wins a trophy. I was thinking about a obstacle courseokieboater wrote:I am not a lower buffalo (below the Boxley Bridge) in the know person. But, I have done some floats over a lot of the area.

OK, I can buy into that.
At Canoe School, I put up a series of gates for flat water practice to get folks used to getting their kayaks on edge.
People start off thinking it is not much of a challenge. Then we move the gates around and start timing. Timed runs can get really competitive.
I like the flat water rodeo idea slalom course especially if you add in fun things to go under, around and through.
Good idea and I hope it comes to pass.
Lemme know if I can help.
I can visualize a tandem canoe with paddlers standing up, facing opposite ends, one paddler blindfolded etc etc and doing a slalom series of gates.

KAYAK LIMBO!!!
Smile, summer run-off is coming!!!
One of the more entertaining things I have done while coaching kids is very similar to what Okieboater was proposing. It works on both whitewater and flatwater courses. The drill requires two paddlers, both in their own respective boats. One paddler is blindfolded and the other provides verbal direction to get the other through the course. Video is highly encouraged for the entertainment factor.
Another idea, which is actually contested at the world championships, is team runs. Anybody with long time involvement with slalom likely has seen one of these. When correctly executed, they are nothing short of amazing. When not, they can be comically entertaining. Each team consists of three boats. The clock starts when the first leaves the start gate and finishes when the last boat crosses the finish line. Penalties (if assessed) are cumulative. One of the most amazing slalom runs I have ever seen was three Slovak C2's absolutely greasing a team run at world championships a few years back. Team runs are fun to watch and even more fun to do.
Regardless, have fun, post results, and most importantly...post video!

Would do my best to attend with my 9 year old son if the dates worked out. Thanks Victor for offering this idea. Once again..You da man! (Canoe School reference
) Unfortunately none of those dates work for me but I hope there is a good turnout. Another option would be the Spring river. Mike
