As per my other thread, I was thinking about taking my 10yr old son on an overnight float of the buffalo this weekend, but I have some concerns about the water level. I was hoping some of you guys that know that part of the state could maybe suggest another river or stream that would be a better float. Preferably something with the scenery and character of the buffalo (but more water). I have only be up that way once so I'm pretty open to suggestions. Anything north of lake degray and south of st. Louis. We have our own canoe so won't need an outfitter, but would need a shuttle.
I'm just looking to take my boy on something a little different than our usual lake degray campouts, or lmf floats.

Re: northern arkansas/southern mo suggestions
If you want reliable water with the spectacular bluffs and topography, well you just rarely get it this time of year. There are many reliable flowing rivers in missouri but they are mostly in the eastern part of the ozarks where the hills are more eroded. Look at the current, lower jacks fork, eleven point, gasconade. The missouri streams have gentle gradient and reliable water, perfect for navigating a loaded canoe. But do yourself a favor and try to avoid peak times on weekends because the drunken partying can drive you crazy. All of the bigger rivers have outfitters who will shuttle you, or you can just ask around at camping places and organize one yourself. There might be rain before your trip so be prepared to be flexible. And remember the quality time with your son could happen anywhere. Bring a fishing pole. Welcome.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had forgotten that it was the weekend of the 4th. I think we have decided to just wait until the buffalo is right. We are just going to head to St. louis or something this weekend and catch some of the show caves along the way. Any must-sees?

Re: northern arkansas/southern mo suggestions
my wife and I are going to the Current River today and will be paddling tomorrow. If you and your son want to join us you'd be welcome. We'll be at the Round Spring campground this afternoon and staying there tonight. (tan Honda Oddesey with a 14' green canoe and one blue rec kayak.) We're doing a 17 + miler tomorrow from Cedar Grove to Pulltite. It's a long float but the current moves along at a pretty good clip.
We'll be using Jadwin canoe rental to shuttle our van unless we meet up with somebody to shuttle with.
The bluffs on the Current River aren't as tall or magnificent as the Buffalo but the springs are fantastic and the the bluffs are still very nice.
