Pinnacle Mt. Big/Lil Maumelle Clean Up - Sat. 9/27
Pinnacle Mt. State Park is having a a Volunteer Clean Up and Cook-Out on Saturday Sept 27th from 9am to 12 noon, with a lunch cook-out provided by the park at noon.
They are going to be cleaning up along all the (hiking) trails, but would also like to get volunteers to tackle trash along the Big Maumelle and Little Maumelle waterways.
I'd like to see if we can't organize an on-the-water contingent. The Big Maumelle section is more straightforward to paddle in and out...the Little Maumelle we might be able to use the Park's private take out by arrangment, or if we have enough volunteers, we might be able to tackle cleaning up all the way to the Burnett bridge take out. A couple jon boats would be handy to work with a team of canoe and kayak paddlers who will be able to get into smaller areas. We might plan to do a little chainsaw log-jam clearing during the day as well...
Let me know if you will be able to come out. If we get enough ACC volunteers lined up then I can figure out the best game plan for arranging our take outs and shuttle situation.
Note: based on my past experience paddling the Little Maumelle, I think there might be trashy areas that will be hard to access in September because there still is a lot of aquatic vegetation that makes paddling away from the main channels difficult. If we find there are a lot of trashy areas we can't easily get to, we might schedule another water-specific clean up with the Park later in the year once that aquatic vegetation has died back...
Thanks all!
Cheers,
Heather aka Lupe

It was pointed out to me that for the ADD, word-challenged among us (Cowper), that I once again used too many words, and failed to highlight some key components.
So here's the short version:

I just wanted to bump this up so folks in the Little Rock area can put in on their calendars.
Could the Jedi Webmaster either do a sticky or add a link to this for upcoming events?
As we get closer to the weekend of the 27th I'd like to hear who all is planning to come so that we can organize the on-water clean up contingent! Thanks!

A buddy and I plan to be out on the little maumelle next saturday late morning/early afternnon. Our plans were to put in at the marina down by two rivers and paddle up so we could lazily float back down. We like the idea of getting a free lunch for picking up some trash, but don't plan to be on the river much before noon. Also, exactly how far up we plan to paddle is very much up to the flow of the river... I was hoping to make it to the observation point for the arboretum, but that's a 5 mile paddle and may prove to be overly optimistic.
So would it be ok to show up and grab a free lunch at noon with the promise of picking up trash afterwords :)
If so, let me know where said lunch will be served and we are there.

Hi Michael -
The information I received from the Parks Dept listed the trash pick up from 9-12 and the cookout afterwards. You can call 501-367-0414 for more information/specifics - I do not know if you need to have checked in during the morning to go to the cookout. FYI - there is no discernable current upstream or downstream as far as I have noticed, at least from the park/arboreteum area to Burnett.
Tentatively, I was thinking those of us with boats would get there to check in/get trash bag supplies etc. at 9am and then go clean up the Big Maumelle area and run shuttle down to the Burnett boat ramp before noon. Then we could have lunch at the cookout, and then do the Little Maumelle float to Burnett (about 4 miles) picking up trash as we go.
It doesn't seem to me like we could do much of a Little Maumelle pick up between 9 and 12 since shuttle would need to be set, etc. and since it's a 4 mile stretch to the first boat ramp. So my thinking is just save the Little Maumelle section for after lunch, but I was still going to do a trash pick up on the Big Maumelle before lunch.
This also depends though on how many yakkers/canoes show up. Doing the Little Maumelle section we could really use a jon boat or two for assistance, as there are places in there with so much trash it will be more than my single canoe probably can haul out of there, and the kayaks won't have much hauling capacity at all, although they'll be good at getting right up to shore to pick up the trash. If it ends up just being a couple of us, then we'll just pick up as much as our boats can carry and that'll have to be it.
Thanks,
Heather aka Lupe

Re: Pinnacle Mt. Big/Lil Maumelle Clean Up - Sat. 9/27
UPDATE:
Okay - here's our plan for Saturday. Meet if you can at 9am at Pinnacle Mt. State Park at the picnic area/ball field area. We will get trash bags/supplies from the Park Dept. there, and in the morning we'll go over and clean up around the Big Maumelle launch area, and set some shuttle vehicles down at Barnett boat ramp. At noon we'll enjoy the yummy cookout provided by the Park, and then after lunch we'll do the 4 mile paddle down to Barnett. There will be 2 spots along the way where we can leave the bags of trash we collect for the Park to pick up later.
Wes - I think for this one, just bring your kayak/canoe and we'll all paddle together. We're talking with the Park staff about possibly doing another concerted effort at trash pick up on the Little Maumelle again later in the year during cooler weather once all the aquatic vegetation dies back. We'll see how we do on Saturday, but I'm thinking there might be several trashy areas that will be hard to reach due to all that aquatic vegetation, so if we all feel we can't do a very thorough job at this time, then we might plan another effort for say December/January and at that time maybe use some jon boats as well. If we do that, we might even see if a local news channel could come along so they could see how much trash comes down some of the side channels from West Little Rock - sort of a public awareness/educational thing. It's something I've been thinking about since last year, and the Park sounds interested in partnering with us on something like that.
Anyway, I think we'll have a fun day. It's a really pretty area (even WITH the trash)...and we'll leave it looking even better! Bring your sunscreen and bugspray! Other tips: bring gloves - even latex/disposable gloves are good for picking up the trash...I'll try to bring some extras. If you have a pocket knife you can put on your pfd, that can come in handy for cutting out old fishing line, too.
See you all Saturday morning!

At this point I'll for sure be there at 9am with my kayak, and a buddy may or may not show up as well. (It's looking doubtful)
Sounds like fun. I've never done that section of the lil maumelle, so it will be something new for me.

Great - glad you'll be able to come!
Here's more specific directions to where we are meeting at 9am:
Take Hwy 10 (Cantrell) West from 430 about 7 miles.
Turn right on Hwy 300 North.
Go about 2 miles and the entrance to the park will be on the right.
See you all in the morning. For anyone coming who doesn't know me, I'll be in the silver Subaru wagon with the camo canoe. See ya!
Cheers,
Heather aka Lupe

Heather,
I or Gary and I may or may not come tomorrow. Depends on how his mom is doing. She is in hospital, had heart attack among other problems, in ICU in Hot Springs.
If I don't come, look forward to a paddle down the Maumelle, hopefully sometime while still nice weather.

Surfdawg just checkin' in. Surfpup and I plan to be there with rec boat and solo instead of tandem. Got to pick him up in Brinkley and get back over here, so we may not see you til late morning or noon. Do you plan to be around the Big Maumelle launch area all morning?
