Buffalo River - AUG 8-10

Post by Richard » Thu Aug 07, 2008 5:02 pm

This weekend will be unusual for this time of year. Water level is low but floatable. Dry pleasant nights.
I am thinking about camping Friday night - Buffalo Point/Rush/Spring Creek. Then spending Saturday night on a gravel bar. Great weekend for kids, snorkles and water guns.
Anyone interested - Post here or email me.

I am going up today, Fri Aug 8, and camp with some of the grandkids.
I am meeting Steve Heye and Earl Hilliard at Hwy 14 bridge at NOON Saturday.
We will either paddle Hwy 14 to Rush or Spring Creek to Hwy 14. Either way we will be doing a relaxed float with stops for swimming.
It is NOT likely that we will be overnighting Saturday. Day float only.
If you would like to join us, plan on being at the Hwy 14 bridge at NOON.

Trip went pretty much as planned. Grandkids loved swimming and snorkling in the river till dark. Then we participated in the evening program on snakes. Next morning they went with park ranger Luke on a wild cave adventure while I broke camp. Afterwards we met Steve Heye at Hwy 14 bridge, loaded his canoe on my car and put in at Spring Creek access. We spent a leisure three hours floating to Hwy 14. Stopped to swim a few times. Explored Water Creek and body surfed at the base of Kimball Bluff. I was surprised by the number of floaters. We had fun watching them making the turn at Kimball Bluff. Eddie did flip one with most just barely getting away.

As we were loading up it began to rain. Just a light drizzle.

Thank you Steve Heye for making it an outstanding trip for the grandkids.

Thanks also to rangers Luke and Robinson for making the Coon Cave trip possible.

Bottom line: We had a great, memorable time.
