I am needing to upgrade. Would like a dome tent that could comfy sleep 4, not rated for 4, 5 or 6 maybe. Good quality and rainproof. May end up putting a tarp over a medium quality tent cuz mom sez 300 is a lot of money. I posted this. I remember the post earlier about tents that went into tarps and mostly smaller tents. We would be family camping at times. My 9 foot wide dome gets small. It's pretty old too. Any ideas or suggests?

I recommend that you consider the REI Hobitat tents. The 4 person (http://www.rei.com/product/745758" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is $249, and the 6-person (http://www.rei.com/product/745759" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is $299.

If you take care of the tent, it should last 10+ years. That's no more than $25 to $30 a year. And you won't need a tarp over the tent to keep dry.

I've been told that Kelty makes the best rainproof tents. That's what I use for backpacking. However, I've been using this cheap tent from Academy for 4+ people. My kayak club used it for a trip last weekend and everyone really like it. I haven't had it in the rain yet though.

I have a Sierra designs and I love it. You might check them out, may be a little more than you want to spend, but great tents.

Gotta agree with the REI tents. I bought the Half-Dome 2 about ten years ago and have no complaints. Goes up quick, reasonably priced, well made.
I once did an overnight trip with the Lake Ouachita kayak group and 3 of 8 tents there were Half-Domes.

Check out the Big Agnes "Big House 4" Huge Tent, that offers great quality without a Big Price....retail is at $259.00 and to get the mega vestibule that could easily seat a big group or be cooked under...is only an additional $100.00. If anyone has ever slept in a Big Agnes sleeping bag system, you know the quality is there...same on their tent line.
