I am a new Arkansas transplant and am planning to take the family up to the Buffalo for some floating and hiking this coming week. We will have 3 adults and 3 kids with us and plan to float, hike and swim.

We are tent campers, but would like to have the van close by for picking up the floaters.

At this time of year what campground do you recommend we use? We want one where we can drop in above camp the first day and drop in at camp the second day. Also, we need good trails for kids and good swimming holes. We will probably be there from Monday-Wednesday.

might take a look at Tyler Bend. you can float 4.2 miles from Baker Ford to Tyler Bend and then 5.6 miles from Tyler Bend to Gilbert. Those would be some short day floats so you'd wanna take your time and stop to swim a bunch.

Or you could try Maumee which would give you about a 12 mile float from Gilbert down to Maumee and then a 9 and a half mile float from Maumee down to Dillards Ferry (which is Hwy 14).

If you're OK with the current heat, and your kids are big enough to make the 3.5 mile Indian Rockhouse Trail (loop), then I'd go with Buffalo Point. Take a small flashlight so you can explore the back corners of the cave, even though you can see 90% of it without one. There's also a sinkhole and other things to see along the way. If you are going to be hiking or any activity where you might come in contact with plants, take plenty of deet to ward off the ticks and chiggers.
