rack a newer jeep

Post by iyak2 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 12:26 pm

Any suggustions on a rack for a 2007 jeep jk?
I would really rather stay away from the immense
bulk of the wilderness system fold back rack, as well as the steep price tag. I'm having a rough go at finding something for the new hardtops since it comes off in 3 separate pieces. Any suggustions would be much appreciated. :)

A rack to carry kayaks.
Not looking to spend 1,000 bucks.
Any positive feedback is welcome.

We put a Yakima rack system on my brother-in-laws 00 hardtop Jeep Wrangler. It works fine holding three kayaks (rec boats) without a problem. All I did was use the landing pads and drilled holes on the outer edges of the top. This is where it is the strongest. Depending on if you have a 2 door of 4 door would be how you do the front bar. On either one I used bigger washers from Tractor Supply on the bottom of the mounts to distribute the weight more evenly across the top.

For example on a 4 door, it should be long enough to just mount it right behind where the two front pieces come off. If it's 2 door, go ahead and mount the rear up as normal, but buy a "light bar" for the front. It mounts to the windshield pillars, something like this http://www.quadratec.com/products/12110_802.htm

All in all for the Two bars, 2 sets of Landing Pads and holders it was around 300 or so. For that same price you can get a kargo master cage http://www.quadratec.com/products/12138_005.htm This will let you have a rack system you can use when your top is off. Which could be nice in the summer! It don't have the cost or the weight as the wilderness rack, but if you want th at look all you have to do is buy a basket for it later. Good luck with purchase, I hope you get a nice rack. :D
