No solid answers here, but quickly browsing
www.garmin.com it looks to me like the wrist-mounted units all have limited capabilities compared to the hand-held models. They do have some "extra" features designed for keeping tabs on just how much exercise you got, but if I'm reading it correctly, they don't have the abililty to load maps, which is a big deal for canoeing and hiking applications.
For me, I'd have to stick a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx or eTrex Venture HC in my pocket, and just accept that it is a little more trouble than looking at a wrist-mounted unit.
Anyone who has used and liked these units, please chime in and educate us all!

I picked up a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, before I left for North Carolina. It has great features for the price and took care of most of my needs straight out of the box. When I got back, I picked up the US Topo 2008 CD and a 2 gig micro SD card for it. Even better.
