For those that don't have a built in SD reader in their PC:
I recently got a 150x Extreme Jump Reader free with my new 4G SD Transcend card off eBay ($32 delivered). I ran a few quick tests yesterday using it and the results were impressive. This generic looking device is USB 2.0 rated (optimal 480MB/sec) and downloaded a 10 sec video (14mb) about 4 times faster than thru the usb cable supplied with the camera. The device also transferred bi-directional, any file or folder I wanted to quickly to my "old" 2GB card, so it can be useful as a thumb drive for backup or transferring files off site, like to share video or pictures with another paddler.
In short, it definitely pays to remove the SD card from the camera and use the device when a lot of pictures are taken. The payoff in time saved downloading from a full 4Gb or higher capacity card must be awesome. In the meantime you can also began charging the battery, rather than discharging it for another 30 mins+ while you would usually be downloading via the cable method. You can also get those carnage pictures up sooner, so we all can see them.

Chester, I lost my USB cable for a camera and went to the camera shop to buy a new one. they would have had to order it. it was cheaper to buy one of the multi card readers they had in stock. I think it cost me 37 bucks.
works great with most all the compact media out there.
no question, you got a much better deal cost wise than I did
my guess is the things are now down to 10 to 15 bucks now at discount.
I went to a pro type camera shop and they have all the camera stuff out there but you pay full retail. I did not know about the universal readers till then and now that is all I use to transfer from camera to computer and also I use the computer to clean the media while it is in the USB reader.
