Paddling Trip Sunday, April 23, 2023. Little Missouri River from Hwy. 84 to Forest Road 12,000. Length is 10 miles, difficulty is Class II-II+. Fun river with fair scenery when the gage reads 4.1. Several surfing spots, some big waves, a few small ledges. One 4 foot waterfall. I'm sorry, but you are going to get wet when your kayak gets water on the top deck at several spots. Meeks Falls and Rockslide Rapid will do that as well as a few random waves. See if you can perform the Heye maneuver at a small double ledge: drop over the first step, make a hard left, ferry to your right on the boil line created by the first ledge without getting sucked into the pourover of the first ledge or washed over the second ledge. Then peel out into swift current to head downstream. See if I paddle into a side surfing hole that I have never been able to paddle out of in 30 years. Pick your own path through a maze of rock outcrops in a long, wide rapid that drops 10 feet. See who will slip on the greasy, wide, flat rock that we will pull up on for a break; keep your helmet on there. Yes, there are some tiresome long pools to paddle through, but you may enjoy a break from all the action. Rec kayaks are suitable if they are fitted with a spray skirt. WEATHER FORECAST: partly cloudy with a high of 62, so dress properly. Bring snacks for on the river and drinks. No glass containers allowed on the river.
