Witch Hazel Creek, Saturday, March 4th, 2023. It will be a very low water run, requiring much maneuvering with lots of sliding over rocks. Photos are from Friday, March 3, about 3 pm. Tentatively meet at noon in the Walmart parking lot on Highway 7 in Mountain Valley, just south of Hot Springs Village. This 3 mile paddling trip will NOT take place unless someone joins me. The creek has many small ledges that are close together. The first ledge is the tallest at 4 feet. One portage may be required where a large fallen tree spans the creek; it has a big eddy on the upstream side. Another tree root hazard is located about a quarter mile above the take-out and requires a move to the right into an eddy. A third tree hazard about a quarter mile below the put-in requires you to stay left to pass a low, overhanging trunk. Those 3 hazards are shown in the photos below. - Ledge after ledge is typical in the first mile and a half

- Four foot ledge close to put-in; run the tongue into 4 feet deep pool.

- Tree root over current near take-out; use eddy on river right to avoid root.

- Portage may be necessary; good eddy on river left with fairly easy portage, may be able to sneak under there.

- Low growing tree trunk; use slow water on left to pass this tree.
