Good Read; 'Canoeing with the Cree'

At Christmas, Marlo gave me a wonderful book, Paddling with the Cree by Eric Sevareid. In 1930, Eric Sevareid and his friend Walter Port, just graduating from high school, set out on a 2,250 mile canoe voyage from their home in Minneapolis to York Station on Hudson Bay. The boys paddled up the Minnesota River to it's headwaters, then downstream on the Red River into Canada and the massive Lake Winnipeg, and on through a maze of smaller lakes and several other rivers to reach their final destination. With an elapsed time of four months to finally return home again, it was a truly wonderful account of their adventures and hardships.
This was , of course, during the Great Depression, so the boys really had to search for a sponsor which they eventually did with the owner of the Minneapolis Star Newspaper in exchange for their agreeing to file journal entries along the way to be published by the paper. $100, $50 up front, with which they outfitted themselves, and $50 upon reaching York Station. Afterward, in 1935, this book was first published, and is still in print more than 75 years later. I highly recommend it!

Best Regards
Jim
