OK, this thread will no longer make sense, but I'm leaving it up just to give board users some insights into stuff that goes on "behind the scenes" in an effort to keep this board better for you, the end users.

Pate was responding to a post that was clearly an off-topic commercial spam post. These are decreasing, but we still get them. Because the registration process is automated, we really don't have a good way to know in advance who really wants to be a part of our "community" and who is just here for their own commercial reasons that have NOTHING to do with paddling or rivers. We usually find out with their first post.

I started to list all the mistakes they make, the "keys" we use to spot them, but why provide future spammers with a manual with how to be better at avoiding detection?

What I can tell you is that this particular spammer registered more than two years ago, and remained unnoticed by not posting. Then, about 24 hours ago, he/she put up about seven posts, of which this was one. All of the others were obvious spam, too. Most were just responses on existing threads. If you weren't interested in that particular topic, you wouldn't have even noticed. Zero of the user's 7 posts added any value to the issue being discussed in that thread. This individual was like a "sleeper cell" hiding amongst us for over 2 years before doing anything to draw our attention.

The user name has been banned. All seven posts have been deleted. The IP address and a range of similar IP addresses have also been banned.
