The View

Post by Prairie Tater » Tue Mar 17, 2015 10:20 am

Just wanted to get this off my chest:

Hadn't been on 74 between Ponca & Jasper for a couple of years. After my Boxley to Ponca run Sunday, we drove over to Jasper. Looking to the north, we saw several "new to me" homes built above the bluff line. At least a couple of them were monstrosities which stuck out like sore thumbs. I realize these are on the private land in the Compton area and that people have every right to build there if they want, but it still kind of sucks. They ruin the view for the folks who just want to see something natural. Don't remember these being there just a few years ago and my guess is that they're not even permanent residences.

I know that I'll probably get flamed, because I know that some here have homes or summer homes out in the "wilds". So let me explain: I'm not really talking about a small or even a large cabin tastefully built in the woods or along the creek or river. I just think that people should use a little common sense and show some respect for others who want to enjoy the natural beauty there. And before someone says: "You're just jealous because you can't do that." I'll just say that no amount of money would even tempt me to build a structure that would be so noticeable in that environment.

One final thought: It is a very good thing that at least part of the Buffalo River corridor has been saved. We'd be seeing new homes & "No Trespassing" signs everywhere.

OK, I feel better now.

I'm flaming you now, but only because you got to do the Boxley run last weekend and I'm jealous. :flame:
You come too.

And therein lies the difference. The viewshed in Boxley valley, even though much of it is still private property, has maintained an agrarian appearance, less distressing than the aggressive, trophy approach taken by the property owners along the Compton crest visible from across the valley.

Yes, Yarbrough. I wasn't going to mention that name, but that IS a prime example of what I'm talking about. Paddling the Hailstone has never been the same ever since that eyesore went up. :flame:
