Are there any artists here?

Post by Prairie Tater » Wed Jan 21, 2015 9:58 am

 Just curious to know if anyone has thought about drawing and producing a "William Nealy style" map/guide for Richland Creek. I know that Mr. Nealy did one for Big Piney. I think the Moores have a copy of it hanging in their store. I believe this would go over really well in the ACC community and would probably generate some funds for the club.

I have "Whitewater Home Companion", and still enjoy getting it out and reading it once in a while. William Nealy's work was very unique and probably helped more paddlers than any other river map/guide. If I'm not mistaken, other paddlers/artists have copied his style and have produced guides for rivers which he did not get around to.

If someone has already done something like this, I'm not aware of it, so please forgive my ignoance.

I have most of Nealy's published work.

All of it is very good.

He has a way of bringing out river features that I have not seen from anyone else.

Did not know about the Big Piney map, will be sure to check it out next Big Piney run.

He also did a book "The Nealy Way of Knowledge" which is a hoot to read. The mountain bike section of that book is the bike version of his take on kayaks.

My Bad! While digging around in some of my old river maps, I found a small copy of the Big Piney map which I was referring to. It is NOT a William Nealy. Although it looks like his work, there is a signature at the bottom which is definately not his. Can't quite make it out. Looks like it could be Tom Thurman.

Here is the BP map and a close-up of the signature. Can anyone here make this out?

Just looked at mine and I can't tell eaither. Maybe Thomas??? Karry moore can tell you. It's copywrited to moore outdoors. Jim Simmons did one of the lil mo and the tot. Don't know if he would be interested in the richland project or not but I would definitely pay good money for a richland illustration!

I would love a hard copy of the Big Piney map. Thanks for uploading that!

Thanks Prairie Tater for posting that map. We have had a copy of that map at our place at Phillip's Ford for as long as I can remember. It remains the only map that I have ever seen to note the location of Phillips ford. John

Getting back to Richland: What else do I have to do on a Sunday morning? Well, here is my rendition of Lower Screw-up..."William Nealy stlye". As you can see, I'm not an artist. I am open to criticism to my layout of the features of the rapid. In particuar, the pyramid rock is probably not in the right place. All I know for sure is that I had a contusion on my right elbow for about a year after having an encounter with it one time. :canoe:

Well thanks, Paul. I was basically just copying what Nealy did. Hey, wasn't Joel doing some cartooning at one time? From what I remember, he was pretty good at it.

I gotta tell ya, I'm gettin' cabin fever really bad. We need some 70 degree weather and some water. I need to try out this knee.

Terry, with a little work I think you could make it happen. And feel free to label the "sneak route" as Roger's Run!

Roger's Run? OK, got it. Actually, I don't really know the rapids well enough to do an entire map. I was hoping we could make it sort of a collaborated project. Maybe each person could do a couple of rapids...something like that. Could be time consuming for only one person, unless they were really good and knew all the rapids well.

BTW Roger, I've finally joined the retired ranks, so hopefully, if my knees hold out, you'll be seeing me on the river soon.

Terry, keep in mind I'm still looking for non productive weekday paddler types. We've still got the little cabin that's usually unoccupied.
