The ACC would be helping clean the pool, all within ~0.5 miles of Benny Craig Park. This area is of special interest to us because Debbie, Aly, Bryan, Jon and I recently relocated some trash booms to Benny Craig Park, to test their ability to help strain out floating trash before it gets distributed into the wetlands. But to see if the booms are really doing a good job or not, we need baseline testing! If we can clean a short stretch of Fourche upstream and downstream of the boom's, then after the next rain we'll get some really good ideas about how much trash the booms really catch, by comparing the amount of litter we find on the banks upstream of the booms to what we see downstream. This could be a major point in gaining support for trash booms at additional locations and finding solutions that don't depend too heavily on a volunteer labor force.
Canoes, kayaks, and even smaller jon boats will all be useful for this effort. Muck boots or chest waders are also great. If your only boat is a smaller WW kayak and you want to participate, let me know; Audubon Arkansas or others may be able to provide an extra canoe.
Summarizing what I know at this time:
Date: March 14, 2015
Time: "probably" 9 to noon (I'll update later.)
Noon to 5 PM if anyone wants to join a downstream float to Interstate Park (4.4 miles) after the "official"
clean up is over.
Place: Benny Craig Park N34.70275 W92.32670 (boat ramp)
Entrance is at 4612 Gum Springs Rd, Little Rock AR
Additional: KLRB always has bags, drinking water, latex or cotton gloves (although I recommend something heavier), and of course there's almost always a free t-shirt for any participant.
Note: Please do NOT include this trip in the "trip leader" drawings for March. This is a workday, not a recreational trip (although if you don't have fun, you're not trying hard enough).
