Florida canoe trip

Post by Chicago Bob » Sun Nov 02, 2014 10:49 pm

I just got back from a 2 week Florida canoe trip with the Prairie State Canoe Club (My Chicago canoe club). This is my 4th year on this trip, which is led by members all over 70 years old, making me, believe it or not,the youngster. This years trip was confined to rivers in the Florida Panhandle. We paddled 12 rivers in 12 days, 9 of which were new to me. Wildlife included but was not limited to dauphins, gators, and a manatee. The author of Canoeing and Kayaking Florida, Liz Carter ask if she might join us for a day, and was of course accepted. On her suggestion we altered the trip and paddled the Wicissa River (an excellent choice) Our group had as many as 15 participants but for most of the trip numbered only 4. It was a great trip and I've already put in for a spot on next years trip. BOB

Hey Bob, It sounds like you all had a good time. I took a look at the sat. images of portions of the Wicissa, and some of the thumbnail photos, very pretty! If you'd care to list the streams you floated on this trip, I know it would be interesting.

Best Regards
Jim

What a great list of streams! I will look forward to researching each of them further. Before I even asked this question about which streams you all floated, I had really hoped Holmes Creek might have been on your list. Spending my high school years in southeast Alabama, and constantly traveling the ninety miles back and forth down to our beach house near Panama City, I went right through Vernon, Fla. on my route. At that time Vernon had a nice little city park on Holmes Creek and it was just a great place to swim. Returning home from the beach, the clear, spring-fed creek was a good place to wash the salt off from a day swimming in the gulf, plus they had some good hometown BBQ and sweet potato pies locally :D Great Times!

Best Regards
Jim
