I don't mean to sound coy first of all.
But dude, sweep the paddle out away from your boat and get good extension.
Don't pull it straight down. Don't pull it at all.
You really just want to set up and sweep it like your just going through the motions.
Your paddle doesn't roll you up, your hipsnap does.
Try getting good extension away from your boat and getting your head as close to the surface of the wàter as you can when you sweep.
Never ever pull it down!
The old adage "practice makes perfect "does not apply to kayaking.
It's "perfect practice makes perfect".

Yeah, buddy. I know. It's been months since I've missed a roll. That one was horrible. I'm pretty sure it was more of a mental thing and I rushed through it. Something like "oh s**t, the machine is almost here, f**k, rock, bang, rock, stars in my eyes, f**k it, I'm swimming." Sometimes you have to swim just to show people that you can. Lol! I bet I can take the Gold for self rescue in the machine at that level!!

I've taken some pretty hard hits down on the falls myself over the years!

I don't think rolling technique advice is necessary here. If you looked at Clay's video posts at Dierks, he's probably had plenty of rolling practice lately. He was just sharing some whitewater action. Care to share some of your own, Don?

I was just giving friendly advice from an old instructor.

Appreciate the video. Coming from a 'new' WW paddler. It's nice on occasion to be reminded that knowing how to safely exit & swim are important no matter how good your roll was last time you had to use it.
Two weeks ago today I learned my roll. I was so stoked after I learned and mastered it, that I attacked every single terrible line at the River Park just daring it to knock me over. By the end of the next day my skill of "not falling over" had gotten so much better that I never rolled. By the end of the next day I still hadn't needed to roll...then I got cocky and took a tumble: Guess what, it had been so long [24 hours] since I'd done my 'new & perfect' roll - I kinda forgot about things like 'air supply', set up, hip snap, etc. So, I got to practice my wet exit, recovery, and swim again. :)

After you have rolled about a million times, you don't have to think about anything much, you just roll.
It becomes like second nature.

I thought Clays video was pretty dang cool, what a neat perspective from under water. I must have missed something in your video Don because I didn't see anything pertaining to proper roll technique.

Hi Clay,
Looks like a righteous swim too me!
And, I am one who has been there more than once!
Glad to see it recorded on film, glad you are making jokes and enjoying the experience. Your film is the next best thing to being there. Everyone needs to do this and understand what to do as sooner or later we all swim. Thanks for sharing.
