Trip Report: Buffy Base Camp and Float

Post by Deuce » Mon Apr 21, 2014 9:57 am

It was one of those rare trips where there's great weather, great company and good water. Can't take that combination for granted. To say Kyle's was full would be quite the understatement, but fortunately Richard and his friends David and Heather Hicks arrived Thursday afternoon to secure a good site. Friday evening we witnessed a dispute regarding the ownership of the site next to us, but cooler heads prevailed (except for one belligerent drunk whose buddies managed to reign him in just enough) and they worked it out. The original occupants were a very nice young couple from Springfield at the Buffy for the first time. A small family took it upon themselves to set up a camper at the end of a row of campsites right next to the road and was having a not so pleasant conversation with the ranger as we headed down to the water to launch on Saturday.

Several folks from the Dustbowl chapter were camped at Kyle's and we had the pleasure of sharing the water with them Friday and Saturday. We followed through with our plan to run Ponca to Kyle's Friday and Kyle's to Pruitt Saturday and I'd be hard pressed to say which float I enjoyed more. There were a couple of swims Saturday but out of respect I won't name the guilty parties. Suffice it to say that THIS TIME I wasn't among them. Not a word, Chris Crawford. :poke2: I headed home Saturday exhausted and happy.
You come too.

Why Deuce whatever do you mean? :? Not "a" word huh? How about 3 words; impressive, astounding, and amazing. Of course, if I had been there or on a river at all in AR......

Glad y'all had a great weekend. We had to cancel our trip to MO. Felicia tore a tendon in her foot on Thur. She's on crutches with a special shoe for at least two weeks. Bummer

I'll own up to my mistakes. I should have let Luke hit the snag first so, like he did, I would know how to get around it. :jaws:

2014-04-18 Floated the Buffalo NR from Ponca to Kyles. I attached my camera (not waterproof) to the side of the canoe and took pictures and videos for the first two miles. The river was running at the low end of ample. A little lower and I would have been dragging. The camera got water inside the lens during the 5th video so I didn't use it the rest of the trip which covered 24 miles over two days. We base camped at Kyles.
The following video clips give you a pretty good idea of what its like to float the Buffalo in April.

We are all afflicted with Cognitive Dissonance. The greater our religious, social, financial or political affiliation, the greater the affliction. We hear what we want to hear. We believe what we want to believe. Truth becomes irrelevant.
