I used a 12 volt 7 amp hour battery available almost anywhere. They're used for security system backup.-M-

saw those at Home Depot. I think it was a 5 amp-hr though. Didn't know if there was anything better/lighter.
Might as well ask about what kind of box you use also

No box needed to keep it dry. Unless you use lithium ion batteries. Which would be lighter.
3Ah, 5Ah, 7Ah... Sealed lead acid (SLA). Whatever size you want to buy will be fine for day trips from what I understand.
Make sure you have to correct charger for the battery you choose.
There is a Batteries+ place over on Bowman where the old CompUSA was. They sell batteries and chargers.

what kind of charger is needed for the emergency sign type? will a car charger work?

Here's what I used as a guide when I built mine. I didn't do everything verbatim.
Used an old Pelcan Case, since I now have a waterproof camera.

I got my battery from something like batterywarehouse.com? about 7 years ago. It is 10 C cells rigged up in series( 5" x 2" square) or parallel, and runs my Atwood 1100 really well. I have a foam saddle and carved out a cylinder that holds the battery in a reagent bottle. Just used plumbers goop to seal up all the holes and switch (live well switch). I use a smart charger that won't burn up the battery. A charge lasted a couple days on the Ocoee, lots of water to get out of the boat.
