WTB: Kevlar canoe
I have a friend who has worn out his neck lifting ABS canoes. He wants to find a kevlar canoe that will extend his years of canoeing. He prefers a whitewater design, but he would consider designs for touring. Would appreciate any leads. Larry Pearce

Re: WTB: Kevlar canoe
Kevlar canoes are hard to come by around here as folks seem to think they don't mix well with our rocky rivers, but have your friend check out the classified ads at Paddling.Net. They often have a number of kevlar canoes for sale. The trick is that most are being sold in states that are pretty far away, so a road trip may be required. I don't see many that would be a ww design, but a Wenonah Rendezvous or a Clipper Prospector in kevlar might be good options. I have a kevlar Rendezvous and while I'm a bit picky about when and where I'll take it, it's great on the Buffalo as long as there's enough water.
BTW - if interested I can also describe ways of transporting and loading canoes that require very little strength. I was able to load and paddle my canoes when I was having trouble with weakness in my arm, and I managed a system of loading and unloading my canoe completely solo even when I didn't have enough strength in one arm to lift 5lbs over my head. Seriously!
Good luck!

A semi-local source of Kevlar and fiberglass canoes is
http://www.classfiveboats.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They have the Mohawk molds. Prices on the fiberglass boats are very reasonable compared to other new glass boats.

Re: WTB: Kevlar canoe
Heather,
Please either post here or chat with me at BOD as to your canoe loading method.
With all the metal in me and the muscle scar tissue, loading my royalex Rendezvous is a slow process.
What I have is the Yakima add on extension bar that fits into the back Yakima cross bar on my camper shell.
I have a set of portage wheels to get the boat from my back yard boat shed to the front driveway.
Then I lift one end of the boat up to the extended cross bar, move to the other end and lift that end onto the front cross bar, back to the rear to move that end on to the camper shell cross bar. Put the extension bar back into the cross bar and tie down the boat.
Takes some time but saves my truck a lot of damage.

Heather and Mark, thank you for those links. I have passed them on to my friend. Heather, I agree with Dave and would like for you to describe how you get a heavy, unwieldy ABS canoe on top of a vehicle. Larry

Re: WTB: Kevlar canoe
On loading a heavy canoe, I built a lumber storage rack and a canoe trailer (from a jet-ski trailer) the same height, more or less. Fairly easy to load and off load a canoe one end at a time, slide it down and up the side at the river. No scratching or denting a car or truck, storage to keep vests and other gear handy between trips..

Ron, thank you for the info about your kevlar canoe for sale. I passed on the information to my friend. I talked with him last night, and he told me that he was specifically looking for a canoe 30# or less. Sorry I didn't have that information when I made the original post.
Michael, thank you for the pic about your rack and trailer. Great use for a wave runner trailer.I think you have a great solution to the heavy canoe problem. Larry

Larry- have your buddy check out Millbrook canoes. Some of the lightest most awesome canoes on the market. If I could afford one , I'd have one. The new Blink is getting rave reviews. -M-
