Re: Fishing Remmel to Rockport
Edgar,
I don't know what Saturday's weather will hold at this time, but there is a chance of rain thus far, also don't know what , if anything I'll have planned otherwise, but if I decide to join you, I'll visit more later. If you go, I hope you will enjoy the day! There are certainly a few spots along that section at low water that should be very good.
I mainly wanted to relate some of my experiences just fishing there in the vicinity of The Ledge. Several times over the years I have put my fishing kayak in there at the boat ramp in the mornings before the water came up and spent the whole morning just working that area from the ledge to the Interstate Bridge. I always carry two ultra-light rigs with me, one rigged with a 1/4oz. lead-head hook w/Baby Brush Hog for the Walleye and Small Mouth bass, and one rigged with a 1/8oz. Lead-head hook w/ tube jig for the Bream and Crappie. Over on the other side of the river, near Tiger's Jaw, and just a little downstream are some large boulders where the water is 10-12 feet deep around them, I have caught several nice Walleye just jigging that Brush Hog straight up and down beside them. I have also sometimes parked the boat on the Ledge over there and caught some nice Brownies by wade-fishing just above the Ledge. On a couple of occasions, I have noticed fish breaking even further downstream from Tiger's Jaw and gotten into some really nice Crappie action. Basically right out in front of Porterfields where the cooking and eating takes place at S&T is a nice deep pool to go after the Crappie and Bream. I loaded up on the Crappie there one day just working from 30 to 100 feet out in front of Porterfield's and from the Ledge back down stream a couple hundred yards
Good luck and happy fishing!
Best Regards
Jim

I'm definitely interested. I've really wanted to see how that reach fishes, but like Mr. Jim I'll have to wait and see. Right now they're calling for a forty percent chance of scattered storms and twelve mph northwest winds. Forecast could go either way from there. I also have to court good will at home and make sure all my chores are done since I'm leaving for the Current the following Saturday.
You come too.

Thanks Jim for the great information. After getting a fishing kayak a month or so ago I have been trying to find some good fishing spots and figure out what to fish with. If the weather doesn't cooperate I may just go try the ledge area. If you guys decide to go give me a holler at Five-0-one, 6 0 nine, 5 eight 6 four.

Re: Fishing Remmel to Rockport
I just love kayak/canoe fishing, for many years now, but don't go enough anymore, and need to revise my suggestions a bit on tackle. It's a 1/8oz. lead-head hook I use for my heavier 'Walleye and Bass' baits, and a 1/16thoz. lead-head hook that I use with all of the tube type jigs for smaller pan fish. Further, the Brush Hog plastic baits I use are called, 'Tiny Brush Hog', I most often use the Zoom Brand, and in the 'Green Pumpkin' color. The smaller jigs I have used most for the Bream and Crappie are by the 'Southern Pro Tackle Co.' and are referred to as Hot Grub', in either a red or purple head with chartreuse tail. There are so many other good patterns. Many of these are available at Trader Bill's in Hot Springs, and later at the new Bass Pro Shop, whenever they open.
The main advice I can offer is to let these baits sink to the bottom, then retrieve slowly, pulling the bait up a few feet with the rod, letting it fall a few feet, and constantly, 'slowly', reeling in the slack during the fall each time. Happy fishing.
Anybody my age remember the movie, 'Man's Best Sport' with Rock Hudson and Paula Prentiss ? circa 1960's That movie made me forget all about fishing for the moment.
Worthlessly Yours

Forecast isn't looking too shabby, and if we could manage to be just ahead of the front they might be active. I'm in. When and where?

BTW Mr. Jim, is that the one where he's a sporting goods salesman who knows nothing about the outdoors?
You come too.

That's the movie I'll look at the weather again this evening and see if I can come down that way.

Re: Fishing Remmel to Rockport
Edgar,
I am planning on coming down to the boat ramp in the morning, about 9am, to fish that area for a couple of hours or so to survey the 'catching' When I arrive, if you'd care to make the float upstream, I'd be pleased to shuttle you up at that time, or later when I leave. However I had already decided to just spend time at The Ledge myself for a little while since I'd like to head home shortly after lunch.
I wish we'd get some rain to bring all our favorite streams up this Fall. Several years ago, Wally Marroy and I made an October float from Norman to Caddo Gap on the Upper Caddo River, and must have caught 30 Small Mouth between us during the day. I'm ready for a repeat, and would only wish it would be convenient for you two to join in.
Best Regards

Great Jim, I'll see you at the ledge around 9:00.
Re: Fishing Remmel to Rockport
Hey Carl, I see what you were talking about with the weather. I think I will try to get to the ledge around 7:30 and hope to be the front. I don't mind getting wet, but would rather start in the dry. See you all when you get there.

Re: Fishing Remmel to Rockport
Three of us had a very nice time fishing today at The Ledge! Edgar was definitely the champion fisher, with a large stringer of Walleye and Crappie. What a lot of fun, it rained on us the whole morning but it wasn't uncomfortable at all.
Thanks again guys, it was great!
