Paddling Mishaps caught on tape!

Post by widakachic » Sat Sep 07, 2013 12:54 pm

Here is a video to start things off... http://vimeo.com/72608423" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have had this circulating on FB and Twitter for a bit, but I had a few requests to post it here. This was a Hailstone "adventure" that no one expected!

Well Done!

You could tell this story verbally many times and people would likely say oh well.

But the way you put this video together it tells the complete story. That exit scene is classic!

Very good work. Too bad the rescue group saved a broken paddle. Sometimes they can be reglued if you can find someone with the proper tools to ream out the hole in the blade.

By the way over the years, I have seen several paddles lost/broken on that run. You are not the first, just the first one to do a superb job of documenting the loss.

Great video! What a crazy thing to happen...although crazy things seem quite likely to happen on the Hailstone.

I'm sure it was no laughing matter at the time, but the video mash up is just fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

Nice! Thanks for sharing. Sorry about the paddle. Hope the hike out wasn't too bad.

Good point Steve!

How about a "rest of the story" about the hike out?

How far down from the put in

What obstacles did you encounter

How long to get out

etc etc

Oh we were laughing it off (albeit with a disgruntled grimace) by the time we were having take-out beers (at the put-in).

For those wondering about the rest of the story, a lot of the reason we hiked out was because we were SO CLOSE to the put-in still that we couldn't stomach the thought of what it would feel like to proceed further down stream, have another issue of any kind, and end up hiking out/spending the night out there. We were about 1/2 mile into the run, literally the first real rapid, before it gorges up and becomes a much different scenario from a hiking perspective. I think the walk out took about 20 minutes and 1-2 creek crossings. Really not bad, considering that even 1 more mile would've significantly changed the walk-ability!

:beer2: Cheers to another adventure in Arkansas (I'm just thankful this one didn't involve cuddling with Ryan Center in the woods for a night)

Hailstone has a lot of untold adventures, just not owned up to and documented like this one was!

Enjoyed the video and the thread, thanks for sharing

I heard about this adventure, but much better to watch the drama unfold. True Stupid form, no question. The Stone was hungry that day my friends!

Great level in the gorge - looks like the water was coming down from "epic" to merely "full-on-burly" levels. The really good part about that is that if you swim, you'll be at the take out by the time you can get out of the river.
