CLABBER CREEK SHOALS QUESTION

Wondering about Clabber Creek Shoals just below Rush on the Buffalo. What's there, and would it be worth paddling down and back from Rush to see this weekend.

Saturday I'm taking some middle school guys from church from Hwy 14 to Rush. If we get to Rush in plenty of time and the guys still have energy (they'll NEVER outlast me ) I thought we'd paddle on down if there's any action at this low level. Any major challenges dragging boats back upstream around the shoal? I'm guessing about 15 minutes paddling each way.

Any thoughts or knowledge would sure be appreciated. Thanks!!

It's been a long time since I floated Clabber Creek shoal, but I would say you would have no problem running it and carrying back up. Some could possibly "attain" back up it in their boats. The river below that spot certainly sees less traffic.

Thanks for the info Twindad. I'd really like to check these shoals out & hope the kids are up to it. I'll write a report if we do.

Google Earth it. There's 3 attached Panaramio pix. Two are in high water though.

I don't actually run rivers anymore. I just fire up the 'Net and splash some water on my face.

the water running through the shoals right now is very low, you will be bumping allot of rocks. if you are running kayaks through walking back up shouldn't be a problem, canoes however would be tricky. They are softball to basketball size rocks on the banks, easily big enough for ankle breaking, also use caution if you are walking the boats back up through the water because the rocks are really slippery right now. Usually in August after the hot summer there is allot of green slimy bunches 0f "seaweed" in the water above the shoals, maybe not bad this summer because it hasn't been that hot and we have had rain.....Also there are usually allot of snakes in that area, There are some rope swings along the left side of the river right across from where the shoals start at the lower end OF rush campground don't know if they are still there though. you might want to check out the shoals first before you take the youth group through.Pam Ellwood

What a PERFECT weekend on the Buffalo!! Water was UP, temps were DOWN!!! We didn't quite have time to paddle down to Clabber Creek Shoals and back. Thunderstorms Saturday morning kept us off the river until nearly noon, but the river flow doubled and rose 5" while remaining beautifully clear. Hwy 14 - Rush Saturday, Spring Creek to Hwy 14 Sunday when it rained 6:30 - 9:00 am, and began pouring down as we were loading our gear at the takeout. Tons of stops for swimming, sparse river traffic for a Buffalo weekend, just really nice. The 8th-9th grade Sunday School guys and our youth director had a blast and wanted to stay longer. I just hope I am forgiven for introducing them to the "dark side" of kayaking instead of canoeing. They are addicted! Stopped at Rockport on the way back and they loved the action at the ledge. Good to see Heather and Harlan and Woody and meet Steve.

Spring Creek to Hwy 14 is BEAUTIFUL. Hadn't been on that stretch in 30 years and I was smitten by the bluffs, cliffs, vistas, peace, so so nice, now my co-favorite overall section for scenery besides Ponca-Erbie.
