FS - Werner Carbon Fiber Bent Shaft Touring Paddle - $215

Post by lakekayaker » Sat Jun 15, 2013 4:44 am

I have a Werner carbon fiber, bent shaft, touring kayak paddle. I do not know what model it is, however, it is a 210cm, high angle paddle with large blades, that I bought new about 7 years ago. It seems to most closely resemble the Werner Ikelos, which sells for $475.00. Weight is right at 1.6 lbs. When I purchased it, it was the paddle with the largest blades that Werner made at the time. The paddle is in good condition with some scratches. According to Werner's website, a 210 cm high angle paddle is suited for people with touring kayaks in the 5'4" to 6'0" range. I'm 5'9", and the most recent kayak I used it with was about 22" wide. I'm asking $215.00.

Anyone not familiar with a high angle paddle - here is the info from Werner's page, which is a good description of the differences between a high and low angle paddle/paddling style.

In sea kayak touring there are two common, yet very different, paddling styles, Low Angle and High Angle. These styles correlate to the angle of the shaft in relation to the surface of the water.

Low Angle is the most common paddling style. It is a more relaxed touring style and relaxed cadence. Our Low Angle designs have longer and narrower blades designed to pull through each stroke with the right amount of surface area for good power while maintaining a smooth forward stroke.

High Angle paddling is typically a more aggressive style of paddling with a faster cadence and a larger variety of strokes being used on each paddle outing.

Our high angle designs have short wide blades for a powerful catch and stroke with a slight dihedral for smooth linking strokes. High Angle designs work best when used with shorter paddle lengths of 205cm - 215cm. The combination of shorter paddle length and a shorter wide blade allows the right amount of balanced blade area to enter the water sooner, supporting a faster cadence, without having to over extend the upper arm.

Are the blades true carbon fiber fabric, or nylon injected with carbon powder or chaff? How wide are the blades in inches or centimeters? Is it a one, two, or 4 piece paddle, and if a put-together, what type joint does it have?. If it is a one piece, what is the feather angle? What is the shaft diameter?

I'm a big spoon sort of person, perferring my Lendal Powermasters, Lendal Norcapp, or my Voyageur Tasman. Would not mind having a high angle spare. My wife Susan prefers the 215cm Lendal carbon-carbon GiF modified crank Powermaster that is now HERS. Scared the daylights out of me when "I" loaned it out once and it was almost lost. I do not loan it out anymore as it is NOT replaceable, Lendal having discontinued it's production. Lendal says I got the very last Powermaster and Norcapp paddles shipped to the USA or in stock with any of their dealers which is a real shame as they are the finest paddles I have ever used, and it took a lot to beat my carbon Voyageur Paddles. I go out a couple of times a week year round and take folks in our old boats, sometimes just to let them get a taste of what a paddle can be.

Thank you, Eric Esche
