paddling a dagger centrifuge, thinking about another open boat besides my antique oca just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on the Mohawk probe 13 dont know much about them just curious wanting an open boat to do some creeking in

I've been creeking with Capt. Aleve in my Mohawk XL13 and love it!
Go about 7 pages deep into the gen. discussion board and look for the post of Upward Bound videos.
On a few of them you will see me and the Mohawk tackling creeks west of Hot Springs Village.

I did hang it up in one spot where the boat was longer than the creek was wide. I wound up bending the gunnel, but the rest of the boat did ok.

Go for it, but expect to get cuts and dents from all the rocks!

The Probe is a tried-and-true design. The 13 used to be called a 12, but they had a 12 and a 12II, and at some point they decided to make one the 12 and the longer one the 13.

The Probe isn't a bad boat, but I do think it's a pretty conservative one. The Mohawk Vipers (12 or 13), Mad River Outrage, Esquif Zephyr, and a few other designs are faster and edge better.. A lot of people are getting into plastic boats <10' long now, particularly for serious creeking (not just river running). Esquif L'Edge, Blackfly Option or Octane, soon-to-be-released Mohawk Phiend all fall into that category.

The Probe is great boat,forgiving and stable. I bashed my 14 down Richland Sunday and had a blast. That being said, it's a big heavy boat. I'm going to plastic because it's new technology and I'm tired of asking for help carrying my boat and and it gets old saying"sorry dude" as I bash kayakers out of small eddys.

That's what you are supposed to do. Ask the Coast Guard, bigger boat always have right of way.

Help with the boat is the price they pay for carrying their beverages.

I'd look at Prelude's, Option's, L'edge's, Octane's, Tareau's, Quake's, Spanish Fly's

In royalex, most folks seem to think more highly of Ocoee's and Viper's than they do Probe's for creeking. I think more highly of Ocoee's for everything. But that doesn't mean a Probe wouldn't work well. But for creeking, a Probe 13 might be a bit long and wide. Having said that, Walter Felton paddles a 14 ft. soft chined boat down anything.

I hope I'm not too late to enter the discussion. I've paddled a Probe 12 for 5 years or more and love it. I recently tried a Probe 13 recently and it seemed heavy and "slow." Sorry that I can't speak of the 13 in more specific terms.

However, I just purchased a Black Fly Option. I think I'm going to love it. More stable than the Probe 12, and far more responsive. I would recommend the Probe 12 without hesitation.
