3rd Arkansas River Cleanup July 6 at Lake Dardanelle

Post by Liz Caldwell » Sun May 19, 2013 1:21 pm

Elizabeth Drake, park interpreter at Lake Dardanelle State Park has invited ACC members to participate in the Third Annual Arkansas River Cleanup July 6:
---------------------------------------------------------------

Lake Dardanelle State Park is hosting the 3rd Arkansas River Cleanup in conjunction with American Rivers’ National River Cleanup. Volunteers are needed for the Third Annual Arkansas River Cleanup Day on Saturday, July 6th starting at 8 a.m. with cleanup of the Arkansas River lasting until 11:30 a.m. The conclusion of the cleanup will be celebrated with a lunch for the volunteers. Lake Dardanelle State Park not only offers outdoor recreation opportunities but also offers a safe home to much wildlife. The amount of trash and debris collected and removed on this day will improve the health of wildlife, people and habitat of our local waterways year round. Volunteering your time for the Arkansas River Cleanup is an easy way to connect with nature and help provide a safer and healthier place for wildlife and visitors.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Lake Dardanelle State Park visitor center. Trash bags will be provided and can be picked up at the registration table. Kayaks and life vests will be provided on a first come first served basis. Volunteers with their own boats, kayaks, and canoes are encouraged to clean up the river on this day. There are launch sites and plenty of parking areas at Lake Dardanelle State Park for volunteers who may bring their own boat. Lunch for volunteers will be held at Lake Dardanelle State Park visitor center at 12 p.m. For cleanup day, wear long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and don’t forget the sunscreen. Volunteers will need to bring their own pick-up sticks and all children younger than 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Lake Dardanelle State Park tour boat will come around that morning to collect trash from volunteers on the lake.

If you would like to pre-register for a kayak please contact Park Interpreter Elizabeth Drake at 479-890-7479. Just a few hours of volunteering can make a difference.

We would like to have any and all the Arkansas Canoe Club members help out with this event if possible. The more boats out on the water the better we can clean-up the river channel. If there are any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.

Thank you,

Elizabeth Drake, CIG
