Water quality and HB 1929?

Post by Fish » Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:40 pm

Got the following on an Audubon mailing list I'm on and wanted to check to see if ACC was on this (sorry if this has already been beaten to death out here, but I don't get on the board as much as I used to):
On March 28, the Arkansas Senate passed House Bill 1929, a bill that allows increased pollution to our waters, conflicts with the federal Clean Water Act, does not fully protect existing drinking water supplies, jeopardizes the state's future drinking water supply, and is not based on sound science.

Some of Arkansas's biggest polluting industries pushed HB 1929, which will dramatically weaken our state's drinking water standards. Currently, most Arkansas waterways are presumed to be potential drinking water sources, which means that they are protected from pollution. As a result, Arkansas enjoys some of the highest quality drinking water in the nation.

The polluters want to lower water quality for all Arkansas waterways. Industry is presenting this bill as a way to address some legitimate concerns about mineral standards, but HB 1929 is a tool that is far too drastic. And in fact, Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality is working to respond to industry's concerns even as we speak.

In addition, HB 1929 is clearly in violation of the federal Clean Water Act. The federal Environmental Protection Agency is highly likely to disapprove these state water quality standards, resulting in a waste of time and waste of money.

Please CALL Governor Beebe and urge him to take a stand for Arkansas’s clean water. Ask Governor Beebe to stand on the right side of history, and VETO HB 1929.

I'm especially interested to see what happens here. If the recent trend continues, I'd say veto and subsequent override are about to happen.
