White River-West Fork to F'ville

Post by Yellcounty » Sun Mar 31, 2013 8:39 am

Can anyone give me more feedback on this stretch? I've looked at the T. Kennon book and wanted to see if there are any permanent (low water bridges) or is there frequent log jams after a strong rain event?

Looking at a family float this afternoon with some folks that are fairly new paddlers and wanted to make sure we won't getting in over our heads (pun intended).

Thanks for any info.

There won't be any significant rapids at this level but YES most certainly there will be strainers. Whole trees likely. Not floated that section in years but there was always some wood almost always passable with good boat control. And the river shouldn't be so pushy you can't portage. When in doubt, get your butts out! The green bridge south of west fork into the west fork park is a good bit of a run right now... will have a bit more action and will also likely have strainers.

Have fun and be safe! Stay far away from any obstacle or feature that you're not absolutely certain you know how to get around. Portage is part of the practice.

The low water bridge at dye creek requires portage. Putting in below it has a strong recirculating plunge pool. I've seen people put in there and get sucked back into.

You should have minimal wood till you get passed hwy 71 bridge, that would be about 6 mile though so might be all you want.

Have fun out there.
