WW school and my 12 year old

Post by 737driver » Sun Mar 10, 2013 6:09 pm

The following is a short video of me, my 12 year old Baron, and Mitch Allen paddling a LOW Trace and decent level Bear creek.
I need a quick assessment on what you think about him attending WW school. He has been paddling for about 8 months. Had floated the Little Mo from the dam several times, rockport 6 or 7 times, Remmel to rockport once, Bear creek 3 times, and trace once. He is comfy in class II+. He has the basics if eddy turns and ferrying. Please watch this and lemme know what you think. I know that one video is hard to assess and my feelings don't get hurt.

Didn't look at video. If you think he's ready to step it up with instruction, register him. The club loves young new paddlers to the sport. Might even be a youth class already formed.

One year, Randy Dodson and I had a group of young girls in a tandem canoe class. Best instructional day of my short career as an instructor.

I did watch the video. I don't see why you would have any question as to whether or not he is ready to advance his skills. I haven't seen him roll or swim, but he seemed to read the water and control his boat well enough. But then I am not a yakker and don't play one on the internet. Sign him up.

Clay,

Baron looks ready to me! You've done a fine job getting him started.

As a parent I encourage you to get him in as many instructional situations, with other young people, as you can.

It is also good to let another adult work with him. Takes some of the pressure off of the father/child relationship.

Can't wait to meet Baron and see him paddle.

Unfortunately for insurance purposes, children must be at least 16 years old to attend Whitewater School.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Ok. No problem. It says 12 on the website link, but no worries. I'll just show him what I learn and he'll be ready when he turns 16.

As well as here http://www.arkansascanoeclub.com/Defaul ... eId=543456" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Rec school min age says 14. You think it would be the other way around.

With all those half-nekkid drunken folks on the Spring River, we have to protect the children! :-)

Lol! Very true. Although my kids see that a few weekends a year at my house.

Not to worry. Cowper promised he'd tone it down this year.

It's possible I am wrong. :) I will check with Paul and Adam to make sure. I will repost once I've heard back from one of them.

We will triple check our paperwork. We have insurance requirements for the American Canoe Association, but I believe we also have requirements for a separate event rider. Will update ASAP.

Thanks!
