lost; Rain

Post by Clif » Tue Dec 04, 2012 6:18 am

anyone got our rain?? Seems we had lots more. When I looked the other day? lots of it is missing. Not sure where I left it, but our creek is barely running. Some years by this time we can't even cross

I think Hurricane Sandy may have stolen it.

I just knew I'd get things flowing again with my previous comments :D On a more serious note, there is so much stuff in the rivers to remove, much of it, like some of the tires we removed, has been there for a long time.

The two evils thing. Easier to get to some of these items in low water, but harder to get boats in and out and down rivers.

Noticed what I think is part of a porty john in the river under Clinton bridge. If it is still there today I need to plan a rescue.

We gonna get "moderated"? maybe we ....ummm... should.......

Clif, Lance & I really need something to do this weekend. Rescuing a poty jon from further drowning might be something we could handle (with gloves of course)

I'll check in the morning. Right under the main new bridge. Looked like just the top. I will be at Higher Ground for a work day. Gumbo for lunch

The piece o potty did move in the recent river rise. It is still under the bridge in a shoal. River right or south bank. Could be reached from that side but would be a hearty climb. There are other items in the pools just above and below the bridge area.

When I joined the clean up party heading out on the Saline River recently, I tried to think of every implement of destruction I could take to aid in the removal of that ski boat, chains, come-along, chainsaw, steel cable, hand tools, gloves,(lunch  ) etc., etc. However one of the best tools we had along that day, and one I didn't think to bring myself, was a round-pointed, long-handled, standard digging shovel . It didn't come into play with the boat, but was vital in liberating most all of the tires, and anything else we scavanged that was encased in gravel and sediment. :D

Best Regards
Jim

I should pay more attention to the lost and found forum.

TRT specializes in getting the stuff nobody else is likely to go get. Also, some types of items are best dealt with using heavy equipment which TRT does not own, but which the City of Clinton does, so I have to ask some questions:

1) Could any of this stuff be dealt with by calling the City of Clinton, and asking them to have City workers remove it?

2) What are the "other items". Some things like refrigerator doors require only determination and a few helping hands; others, like for example car bodies, require heavy equipment or some very serious cutting tools...

3) It seems highly likely that somebody knows where the porta-jon came from; almost every one I've seen has a Company name and phone number on it. While retrieval of the porta-jon from Little Maumelle was second only to the ski boat from the Saline for general fun factor, what is missing from that equation is requiring those responsible for letting it get into the river in the first place, to also take responsibility for getting it out of the river. The portajon will have a name; the company will know who rented it, and probably placed it for them. That Company, or their insurance company, should be required to take care on not just the replacement costs, but also the retrieval costs.

In short, tell me more! (and soon please - rain over the next few days could be a game-changer on difficulty of retrieval)

Update: Debo says city is aware of the porta-jon, but has not yet figured out how to get it out. She and I are going up to take a look for ourselves Friday afternoon; Clif, feel free to drop by or call (I assume you still have my number).

If it is just too easy to resist, we may do something, but mostly my intent is to secure it to the bank so we don't have to go searching for it downstream later if we can't get to it this weekend or before the next rain.

If the weather is OK, how about Sunday afternoon for the extraction?
