Lil Mo Monday 10/8

Post by Lupe » Sun Oct 07, 2012 6:12 pm

I have Monday off of work and they are releasing again this week at 2pm each day. Bigger release this week at 3+ generators.

Are any others interested in going? It will be mid 60's so on the cool side compared to summer paddling, but still great paddling weather!

Update:

We have 3 going (me, Mike Stanley, Cowper). If we get any others to meet us there, the three of us will carpool together, but if no one else posts, we'll come in 2 cars. If anyone else wants to come, carpool options would be Conway (Cowper), or Little Rock, or if you are in another direction, we'll just meet you there.

Big Mo Monday! :D

Can I let you know tomorrow morning? Not sure if I will be up for it or not.

Sure, just let us know when you know. Preferably before we leave town, don't want to have to circle back to pick you up. :poke2:

(but will if we have to)

Wish I had noticed this last night. Couldn't have gone today but could have gotten away long enough to come up and help y'all with a shuttle. Hope you didn't have to bring two vehicles all that way!

so Cowper, what is your opinion of the "wave" at the dam. Would it be a park and pay or better to move on down the river?

The waves up closer to the dam never formed anything that I liked as much as some of the downstream stuff, and at the level we had today (slightly more than 3 generators), they changed so fast that even if something was surfable, it only stayed that way for 2 or 3 minutes. I literally watched one wave that was too small to surf become marginally surfable, but made the mistake of deciding to put on my gloves before surfing it. By the time I got the gloves on and paddled toward it, the wave had already changed again and washed out.

The area may have a lot of potential if someone further "tunes" the rockwork that the fisherman have put there, but I probably won't go to the extra effort of putting in closer to the dam very often.

Relative to the rest of the run, here are some things we noticed with the "extra" water of the 3+ generator release:
1) Water made its way downstream much faster - features that are good on rising levels washed out faster. This may not be a concern with smaller groups, but if a larger group was taking turns on a feature, chances are good not everyone in the group would get to play at the optimum level.
2) The play wave about 1/2 way down the run (with the gigantic return eddy) was bigger and faster, and stayed good even at full flow.
3) The play waves down by the houses, not too far from the take out, built to really good levels, but took some work to catch because of the current speeds. As with the 3 generator release, when the river filled up, they began to wash out.

Heather commented that maybe the optimum level is something we haven't seen yet, like 2.5 generators. I think she may be on to something, given that we both liked some features better at 2, and others better at 3.

And oh, by the way - YES, we had a GREAT day on the river!
