Shoulder surgery, not so bad

Post by Chester » Sun Aug 19, 2012 7:43 am

Well, 8 years after being diagnosed with bones spurs on both shoulders , shots of cartisone, loss of rolling ability, pain and suffering, loss of medical insuranc epending, I decided to get the worst one done last Wednesday. Good news is, surgery sure has changed since 40+ years ago. In the operating room at 0815, leaving the hospital at 1000.
Not supposed to get it soaking wet in river-type water, but could float down on a tube today I guess. :crossed:

Hey summerbee, thanks. Actually the doc came in, saw I was not in the sling, heard I was mowing & weedeating the yard, so he threw the rehab info in the trash, saying lookslike I won't need any, lol.

Noooooooooooo! Shoulder function, longevity and health are functions of proper arthrokinematics. Simply put, if your scapular and cuff muscles aren't properly strengthened, you are at increased risk for wear/tear OR traumatic injury. ...just sayin'. But then, this is what I do for a living all day.
At any rate, best of luck and pray for rain.
Cheers,
Tammy

I don't know how to double quote ( ) so here's copy and paste:

CHESTER: "Hey summerbee, thanks. Actually the doc came in, saw I was not in the sling, heard I was mowing & weedeating the yard, so he threw the rehab info in the trash, saying lookslike I won't need any, lol."

Chester, this was my precise experience two years ago after bone spur/bursa/shoulder decompression surgery. Doc said there was "no medical explanation" why mine did so well so fast. He refused to give me a PT prescription even at my request saying he was concerned that any change in routine might discourage whatever I was doing that was working so well.

Summerbee, nine months later I hired a personal trainer for 1 day a week, and my range of motion (especially vertical and behind-the-back) and strength and endurance in that shoulder dramatically improved. Lots of rotation exercises with stretch cords, upright rows, easy bench and shoulder press, even some pushups. :wht: BEST THING I EVER DID BESIDES THE SURGERY. I was amazed how much additional progress we made and we took it very slow. Progressed so much farther than I would have by myself. Sure wish she hadn't moved to Dallas. She helped a lot with strengthing a weak ankle too.

So now I can paddle at least 5 consecutive days (before after 1 1/2 days the shoulder gave completely out), am swimming 2000 yds 2 - 3 times a week (too much pain at all to swim before surgery), just like the confidence and ability to carefully load my canoe by myself and just all the enhanced daily life actions. If I can ever find another trainer like her in Shreveport I'll sign on again in a second! Just sharing what worked so well for me and lets me do what I love so much.
